JANE E. BISE, daughter of John and Judy Bise of Vinton, was named to the spring dean's list at Virginia Commonwealth University. She is a 1992 graduate of Cave Spring High School.
KRISTIN WESTERMANN of Roanoke, a junior at Wittenberg University, was on a program to aid rural reconstruction in the Honduras.
She is the daughter of Dwayne and Kay Westermann of Roanoke.
MARY ELIZABETH BRYANT, a freshman at Radford University, was selected as a Radford Scholar.
Bryant will receive a full four-year scholarship worth $44,000 from the Radford University Foundation Inc.
Bryant's award is funded by Elbert J. and Evelyn H. Waldron of Shawsville.
Bryant is a graduate of Patrick Henry High School.
JOHN ELLIOTT III of Roanoke was among 20 housing residents who received $1,500 educational scholarships from the Virginia Housing Development Authority.
The scholarships, part of VHDA's new $30,000 education scholarship program, were available to residents or their dependents living in rental housing financed by the Virginia Housing Development Authority.
Elliott plans to study electronics at Virginia College.
GERALD A. DeMASTERS, a student at Salem High School, was the winner of the Trig-Star Competition, a trigonometry test sponsored by the Western Chapter of the Virginia Association of Surveyors and the National Society of Professional Surveyors.
Individual school winners are: Brandon J. Simpson, Cave Spring; Sarah Rene Hudson, William Byrd; Meghan M. Templeton, Northside; Kelly A. Solesbee, Glenvar; Luke Taun Chong, Patrick Henry; Darsha Stevens, William Fleming; Theresa Mai, The Governor's School; Cory Key, Liberty; Jennifer Tindle, Staunton River; and Lesley Bowne, Jefferson Forest.
DeMasters represented the Western Chapter at the state competition in Norfolk in July.
LAUREN COOK, daughter of Tina Cook of Roanoke County, was one of 140 students chosen from a pool of 1,500 to represent the state's top achievers and leaders in the Virginia Future Miss Pageant.
Cook received the Above and Beyond trophy for overall friendliness and attitude toward other candidates. The pageant is part of the National Youth Scholarship Program. She is a sixth grader at Hidden Valley Junior High School.
KIMBERLY ANN BOUCHER, daughter of Roger A. and JoAnn Boucher of Roanoke, has been nominated for Who's Who Among Law Students. She is a second-year law student at Albany Law School in Albany, N.Y.
ROANOKE MEMORIAL HOSPITAL'S School of Practical Nursing has announced the names of Roanoke Valley students who graduated in August. JOHN CRITZER of Fincastle has won the $1,000 state DeMolay scholarship.
Critzer, Jason Akers of Roanoke and Chris Pendleton of Blue Ridge, also received $850 scholarships from the Karnes Memorial Scholarship Fund during the recent statewide DeMolay Conclave.
THE ARTS COUNCIL OF THE BLUE RIDGE recently handed out scholarships to six students to help them explore or extend their experience in the arts. Ray Jackson of William Byrd High School, Tony Southers of William Fleming High School and Hassan Al-fatlawy and Eddie Nichols, both of Patrick Henry High School, received money to buy art supplies.
Jeff Eeningenburg, a recent Patrick Henry graduate, will use his scholarship to cover one semester of voice lessons at Moody Bible Institute; and Angela Primo of the Roanoke Valley Christian School will use her scholarship to continue art lessons.
MELISSA J. RAMSEY and KIA SHERMAN, seniors at William Fleming High School, are included in the 29th annual Edition of Who's Who Among American High School Students.
SARAH LENT, daughter of Hilda and Elmer Lent Jr. of Vinton, recently attended the National Young Leaders Conference in Washington D.C. A junior at Staunton River High School, Lent was among 350 National Scholars throughout the United States chosen to attend. During the six-day conference, participants interacted with key leaders and newsmakers from the three branches of government, the media and the diplomatic corps.
BENJAMIN H. O'DELL son of Thomas and Marilyn O'Dell of Roanoke, recently was awarded one of two $2,000 undergraduate research grants from the physics department at Guilford College in Greensboro, N.C. The grant will enable O'Dell to complete a one-year research project to be presented at the 10th National Conference on Undergraduate Research in April.
