STAUNTON RIVER RALLIES TO TOP JEFFERSON FOREST

Staunton River rallied from a five-point deficit with one minute left in the game to take a 45-44 Seminole District victory over Jefferson Forest on Thursday in a girls' high school basketball game in Forest.

With two seconds remaining in the game, the Golden Eagles' Paula Nowlin rebounded and scored off of a missed field-goal attempt by Crystal English to steal the victory.

The lead changed hands several times throughout the game. Three of the last four meetings between the two district rivals have been decided by one point on the last shot of the game.

Staunton River moves to 8-5 overall and 8-5 in the district. Jefferson Forest drops to 9-4, 9-4.

Liberty 54, Altavista 45: The Minettes jumped out to an early lead and cruised to a Seminole District victory over Altavista in Bedford.

The Minettes (10-3) were led by Sue Cowlbeck who scored 15 points and had 11 rebounds. Kellea Whorley added 14 points and had 5 assists.

The Colonels (4-9) were led by Shannon Shevitz, who poured in a game-high 21 points, 15 of which came on five 3-pointers.

Narrows 72, Bland 33: In Narrows, the Green Wave jumped out to an early 17-6 lead and pounded Bland in a Mountain Empire District contest.

Narrows (12-0, 3-0) used its full-court press and defensive pressure defense to force 20 steals. Bud Lucas had 16 points, and Susan Webb added 12 points and 10 rebounds for Narrows. Melissa Lawerence had 10 assists and 12 points , and Becky Turner grabbed 10 rebounds and scored 10 points.

Hanne Evenson led Bland (0-11, 0-3) with 10 points.

Salem 64, Rockbridge County 36: Shellie Johnson scored 14 points to lead Salem past Rockbridge County in a Blue Ridge District contest in Lexington.

Natalie Wallace led the Wildcats (2-10, 0-4) with eight points.

Craig County 60, Highland 42: In Monterey, Craig County jumped out to an early first-quarter lead, and the Rockets (1-10 overall, 1-5 Pioneer District) claimed their first win of the year and avenged an earlier loss to Highland in a district game.

Bonnie Boardwine led Craig County with 17 points. Laura Nelson chipped in 13, and Sommer Horn added 11.

Highland (1-8, 1-5) was led by Tammy Shiflett's 23 points and 12 rebounds

Northside 56, Alleghany 45: Crystal Barrett scored 14 of her game-high 23 points in the second half as Northside outlasted Alleghany in a Blue Ridge District game at Northside High School.

Alleghany took an early one-point lead behind Melissa Page, who scored six of her 12 points in the first quarter, but Northside (8-7, 2-2) took a five-point lead at halftime behind Amber Kern, who scored six of her nine in the second quarter.

Galax 64, Fort Chiswell 51: Despite constant foul trouble that saw two Galax starters foul out, the Maroon Tide pulled out the Mountain Empire District victory over Fort Chiswell in Galax to remain unbeaten.

Galax sophomore Erin Kyle led the Maroon Tide (14-0, 3-0) with 13 points, 11 rebounds and six steals before fouling out. Sophomore Mindy McGrady also scored 13 points.

Auburn 65, Shawsville 40: In Shawsville, Auburn (8-6, 2-1) used 26-point second quarter to wear down Shawsville to pick up their second Three Rivers District victory.

The Eagles used their full-court press to force Shawsville (8-8, 1-2) into 20 turnovers en route to the win. Crystal Moles, the fourth-leading scorer in Timesland, had nine points in the second quarter to go along with her game-high 23.

Grayson County 62, Rocky Gap 42: Sophomore Lindsey Carico scored 22 points to lead Grayson County over Rocky Gap for its first win of the season in a Mountain Empire District contest in Independence.

Carico scored 10 in the third quarter as the Blue Devils (1-12, 1-2) pulled away. Junior Dana Whittington added 11 points for Grayson County.

Amanda Clark led Rocky Gap (1-12, 1-12) with 14 points. Michelle Sarver and Melissa Leedy added 10 each.

PH-Glade Spring 56, Rural Retreat 41: Nikki Davis scored all 13 of her points in the first half as Patrick Henry-Glade Spring jumped out to an early lead and went on to the Hogoheegee District win over Rural Retreat in Rural Retreat.

Melinda McCall led the Rebels (7-7, 7-4) with 15 points, and Whitney May added 12.

Rural Retreat (9-3, 8-3) was led by Jane Grubb, who scored 12 points.

Parry McCluer 54, Bath County 43: Parry McCluer went to a 1-3-1 zone and shut down Bath County's Katie Hardbarger in the second half to notch the Pioneer District win over the Chargers in Buena Vista.

Hardbarger scored 14 of her 17 points in the first half to keep Bath County in the game, but the Fighting Blues (9-4, 6-1) held her to three points after changing defenses at halftime.

Laurel Park 40, Magna Vista 37: In Ridgeway, Brandi Martin sank one of her two free-throw attempts late in the game to ice a Piedmont District win for Laurel Park and stop a Magna Vista (8-7-7-5) comeback.

The Lancers (8-7, 7-5) saw their 31-20 third quarter advantage slip to a 37-35 lead with about two minutes remaining in the fourth quarter.

Floyd County 93, Giles 46: Floyd County launched in 10 3-pointers in their demolition of Giles in a Three Rivers District game in Pearisburg.

The Buffaloes (10-4, 3-0) scored at least 21 points in all four quarters. Floyd's balanced scoring attack was led by Charity Shrewsbury and Melissa Cantrell who both tallied 13 points.

Giles (6-7, 0-4) was led in scoring by sophomore Kristen White with 12.

Martinsville 88, Dan River 34: In Ringgold, Martinsville went on a 26-2 second quarter run to add to a five-point first quarter lead as the Bulldogs blasted host Dan River in a Piedmont District game Thursday night.

Tresita Holland led Martinsville (12-3, 10-2) with 18 points.

Deauti Giggetts scored a team-high 12 points for winless Dan River (0-15, 0-12).
