About 7:55, a Roanoke police officer found the woman injured in the 600 block of Eighth Street Northwest. Police officials said a witness told them the woman was seen talking to a man at that location.
The woman then walked into an apartment in the 600 block of Eighth Street. When she left, a man demanded her pocketbook. A struggle ensued. The man displayed a handgun and shot the woman, then fled on foot, police said.
The woman was treated at Roanoke Memorial Hospital and released, according to a nursing supervisor.

A 36-year-old Southwest Roanoke man was robbed and stabbed outside his home Wednesday evening.
Police said Bruce Alan Prilliman told them he was getting out of his car in the 300 block of 18th Street Southwest about 9:30, when two men approached him from behind. Prilliman was hit in the head by an unidentified object. When he turned around, he was stabbed in the stomach. The men took Prilliman's wallet and fled.
Prilliman was in stable condition Thursday at Community Hospital of Roanoke Valley, according to a nursing supervisor.
Two men were found in a Southeast Roanoke house suffering from head injuries after they were beaten with a bat Thursday morning.
About 1:37, officers responded to a call at a house in the 800 block of Estates Road Southeast and found Scott Allen Paxton, 22, and Robert Chad Thurman, 21.
Police said Paxton's father told them his son and Thurman were driving behind a black Nissan pickup truck in South Roanoke. The truck stopped at an intersection on Old Rocky Mount Road. A man armed with a baseball bat came out of the truck.
Thurman left the vehicle he was in, and the man hit him in the head with the bat. Paxton then got out to help Thurman, and the man hit Paxton in the head.
Thurman and Paxton were treated at Roanoke Memorial Hospital and released, according to a nursing supervisor.
