Northside (2-4) saw its 10-0 halftime lead cut to a field goal in the third quarter when the Trailblazers' Paul Wilson, a 6-foot-3, 241-pounder, bulldozed his way into the end zone. Moments later the Vikings ran a reverse to Shovely, sealing the victory on their home field.
Mike Bullock put Northside on the board in the second quarter when he hauled in a 19-yard scoring pass from Mike Dillon. Bullock did most of his damage on the ground, running for 144 yards on 18 carries. Later in the second period, Scott Booth split the uprights from 42 yards to give Northside its halftime advantage.
Spotswood fell to 4-2.
Patrick Henry 21, Heritage 14: The Patriots saw their 14-0 halftime advantage disappear in the third quarter, but capitalized on Heritage's third fumble of the game and ruined the Pioneers' homecoming in Lynchburg.
Heritage (3-3) return-man Deon Stokes botched a punt in the fourth quarter on the Pioneers' 15-yard line, allowing Patrick Henry (3-3) to take over on the 17. Seconds later Kevin Washington trotted 17 yards for the winning touchdown.
Heritage didn't give up, however, as the Pioneers took the ensuing kickoff, and forced their way down to the PH 11-yard line with less than two minutes to play.
After two short runs, Heritage quarterback Andre Hunt was sacked for a 7-yard loss, forcing a fourth-and-14 situation. His desperation pass was picked off in the end zone by Nick Saunders.
North Cross 34, Fishburne Military 12: Carter Lee rushed for 165 yards and four touchdowns as the Raiders (1-5, 1-1) rolled to their first victory of the season, a Virginia Independent Conference decision over visiting Fishburne Military (0-5, 0-2).
North Cross dominated from the outset, driving 72 yards on its opening possession as Lee scored on a 3-yard run.
Lee ran 4 yards for a touchdown in the second quarter as the Raiders built a 14-0 lead.
North Cross put away the game in the third quarter when Mike Dyer recovered the opening kickoff at the Fishburne 1 after the receiving team apparently thought the ball was in the end zone. Lee took it in on the next play and added a 4-yard scoring run in the third period.
Covington 34, Lord Botetourt 26: The Cougars survived 325 yards rushing and four touchdowns by the Cavaliers' Wesley Cox to secure a wild non-district victory in Daleville.
Covington (3-3) was led by backs Tom Luckett (160 yards) and William Stewart (114).
Cox, a junior tailback, was responsible for all 26 points scored by Botetourt (1-5).
Lynchburg Christian 36, Roanoke Catholic 0: The Bulldogs (2-5, 1-1) found the end zone five times as they stunned the Celtics (4-3, 1-1) in a Virginia Independent Conference game in Lynchburg.
Roanoke Catholic, ranked sixth in the state's Division I private school poll, never could put any points on the board.
\ Christiansburg, 28, Glenvar 7: Mike Scott and Eddie Miller each found the end zone twice as the Demons took advantage of four Highlanders turnovers and ran over visiting Glenvar.
