Led by the passing combination of Frank English and Michael Berry, Byrd scored early and often as it cruised to a 35-7 non-district victory over Carroll County in Vinton.
The Terriers (6-0 overall, 2-0 district) travel to Salem on Oct.20 for a matchup that will put the winner in sole possession of first place in the Blue Ridge District.
Thanks to three touchdown passes from English to Berry, Byrd scored on every possession in the first half while taking a 35-0 lead.. The Terriers so dominated the Cavaliers that only once in the first half did Byrd force a third-down situation.
``It was nice to get it over with quickly and give some of our young kids a chance to play some,'' said Jeff Highfill, the Terriers' coach. ``We had some kids banged up with some minor injuries and it was nice to give them the night off.''
Byrd scored on its second play from scrimmage, thanks to a 5-yard punt by Carroll County's Calvin Grubb that gave the Terriers the ball at the Cavaliers' 35-yard line. After a 1-yard loss on a running play, English hit Berry over the middle for 36 yards.
``That's the way it's been all year. We get down early and we can't get back,'' said Dave Haynie, Carroll County's coach.
