Volunteer returns from relief work
BLACKSBURG - Patricia Kellogg of Blacksburg, a volunteer with the Montgomery County Chapter of the American Red Cross, returns home today from her three week stay in St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands, following Hurricane Marilyn. Kellogg is a registered nurse. "About 95 percent of the houses are severely damaged and the people really need help," she says. She worked in emergency shelter management and as an outreach nurse with the St. Thomas Red Cross Family Service Center.
Disaster training courses offered
CHRISTIANSBURG - The Montgomery County Chapter of The American Red Cross will offer free disaster training for volunteers on Nov. 11 and 12. The sessions - "Mass Care," "Shelter Operations," "Disaster Assessment" and "Family Services" - will be held in the St. Paul United Methodist Church Annex, College Avenue, Christiansburg. Majic 105 plans tailgate party
BLACKSBURG - Majic 105 will hold a "Tech Connection" tailgate party outside Lane Stadium today. Dean Tyler and Ralph Stewart will broadcast at 11 a.m., before the Virginia Tech homecoming game. Free food will be provided by Macado's and Pepsi.

Computer musician lectures at Radford
RADFORD - Max Mathews, the "father of computer music," visits Radford University on Tuesday and presents a concert with his invention, the radio-baton.
The radio-baton is a new instrument for live performance of electronic music that reduces the mechanical demands on the performer.
The performer holds a baton in each hand. Radio technology is used to track the movements of the two batons and a computer program interprets the motions musically, sending commands to a synthesizer to play the music.
Mathews, a professor of music research in the Center for Computer Research in Music and Acoustics at Stanford University, has been developing computer programs devoted to creating computer music since 1957. Joining him will be soprano Maureen Chowning and digital trumpeter and composer Dexter Morrill.
The trio performs in Radford University's Powell Hall, Room 101, at 8 p.m. Admission is $3 for adults $1 for children, or free with Radford University ID. Call 831-5324.
