Whipple, the Hokies' leading rusher Friday, ran for 54 yards on six carries. Whipple scored on a 1-yard bootleg run around the right end. Jeff Haug's extra-point kick failed.
The Hokies (1-1) took a 9-0 lead in the third quarter when Haug booted a 24-yard field goal.
Whipple completed 6 of 18 passes for 67 yards. Hargrave's Joe Darden intercepted one Whipple pass.
Quarterback Jamont Kinds led Hargrave (3-5) with four carries for 54 yards.

The Roanoke Rush goes for its fourth consecutive win today when it travels to West Virginia to play the Lightning in an afternoon game.
The Rush (5-3) is coming off a 35-27 victory over the Washington Chiefs last Saturday at Victory Stadium. The win gave Roanoke a four-game sweep of the two Washington squads this season.
Roanoke travels to Charleston, hoping to avenge an earlier loss to the Lightning (7-1). West Virginia defeated Roanoke on a last-minute touchdown pass by Major Harris for a 17-12 victory.
