F-C GRABS FIRST PLACE IN PIEDMONT WITH WIN

Fieldale-Collinsville staved off a late Martinsville rally, including Jess Wade's potential game-winning field goal with nine seconds left, to preserve a 21-19 Piedmont District victory Friday night in Collinsville.

The victory, Fieldale's second over Martinsville in as many years, kept the Cavaliers unbeaten and gave them sole possession of first place in the Piedmont.

Martinsville (4-2 overall, 4-1 district) scored two fourth-quarter touchdowns to pull to 21-19 with six minutes left. The Bulldogs had a chance to win it, but Wade's 47-yard field-goal attempt fell short.

Fieldale-Collinsville (6-0, 5-0) broke open a 7-6 game in the second quarter when it scored twice on a pair of long touchdown passes by Phillip Hairston. The first one covered 46 yards to Brack Scales, and the second one was a 66-yarder to Delvin Joyce.

Manti Venable ran for 129 yards and two touchdowns for Martinsville.

James River 18, Parry McCluer 13: For the first time in 25 meetings, the Knights defeated the Fighting Blues, winning a Pioneer District in Buchanan on the legs of Shahan Burrell and Brian LaFlore. The Fighting Blues held a 23-0-1 advantage in the series before Friday night's game.

Nathan Floyd put Parry McCluer on the scoreboard first with a 1-yard run in the first quarter, but LaFlore intercepted a pass soon after and returned it 76 yards for a touchdown. Burrell and LaFlore each scored a rushing touchdown for James River (6-1, 3-0), with Burrell picking up 91 yards and LaFlore 30 on the ground.

Travis Blankenship completed four of six passes for 144 yards for the Fighting Blues (3-3, 1-1), with receiver Shawn Sorrells catching three for 98 yards.

Parry McCluer drove to the Knights' 30-yard line late in the fourth quarter, but the game ended when Blankenship was sacked on the final play.

Stuarts Draft 21, Bath County 8: Four turnovers plagued the Chargers as they fell to the Cougars in a non-district matchup of Top 10 Group A teams in Stuarts Draft.

Eighth-ranked Bath County (5-1) could not overcome two fumbles and two interceptions. The Chargers mounted a touchdown drive to open the second half, capped by Corey Wolfe's 12-yard pass to Ivan Franklin, but the Cougars (7-0) came right back to seal the victory.

Jamie Carroll rushed for 90 yards on 16 carries to lead Bath County. Brad Rhodes had 66 yards on 15 carries for fifth-ranked Stuarts Draft.

Covington 34, Lord Botetourt 26: The Cougars survived 325 yards rushing and four touchdowns by the Cavaliers' Wesley Cox to secure a wild non-district victory in Daleville.

Covington (3-3) was led by backs Tom Luckett (160 yards) and William Stewart (114). Luckett had touchdown runs of 19 and 38 yards, and Stewart had scoring runs of 37 and 3 yards.

Cox, a junior tailback, was responsible for all 26 points scored by Botetourt (1-5). The Cavaliers lost despite amassing 415 yards total offense.

Staunton River 9, Rustburg 0: A big defensive play by the Golden Eagles sealed a Seminole District victory over the Devils in Rustburg.

Two plays after the Devils' defense stopped Staunton River with four minutes to play in the fourth quarter, the Golden Eagles intercepted a pass and Jeff English ran it in from 5 yards for the only touchdown of the game.

English led the Golden Eagles (3-3, 3-3) with 66 yards rushing on 19 carries. Jarrett Ferguson rushed 13 times for 65 yards.

Sean Lynch had 43 yards on eight carries for Rustburg (3-3, 3-3), and David Johnson ran six times for 25 yards.

Bland County 41, Narrows 20: The Bears' potent running attack was too much for the Green Wave as Bland County won a Mountain Empire District game in Narrows.

Senior Todd Morehead led the Bears (5-1, 2-1) with three rushing touchdowns.

The Green Wave (2-4, 0-2) was led by Keith Morris, who rushed for 113 yards on 20 carries and scored two touchdowns.

Graham 38, Blacksburg 24: Brandon Banks carried 11 times for 135 yards and two touchdowns as the G-Men rolled past the Indians in a non-district game in Bluefield.

Banks' total was part of a 344-yard rushing effort by Graham (5-2), which did not attempt a pass.

The G-Men broke out early on a 1-yard run by Tony Easley, who rushed for 67 yards. Graham took a 20-10 halftime lead on touchdowns runs of 1-yard by Ryan Bourne and 37 yards by Jacob DeLorso.

Banks put away the game after halftime on touchdown runs of 26 and 74 yards.

Blacksburg (2-4) was led by Tommy LaForce, who threw three touchdown passes as Blacksburg netted 227 yards through the air.

LaForce threw a 37-yard touchdown strike to Ben Pinkerton in the second quarter as the Indians cut the lead to 10 at halftime. He then threw strikes of 52 yards to Steven Hunt and 22 to Phillip Travis in the fourth quarter.

Christiansburg 28, Glenvar 7: Mike Scott and Eddie Miller each found the end zone twice as the Demons took advantage of four Highlanders turnovers and ran over visiting Glenvar.

Christiansburg ran for 368 yards, led by Scott, compared with the Highlanders' 135 yards rushing. Glenvar also threw away its hopes of winning with a pair of interceptions and two fumbles.

Scott put the Blue Demons on the scoreboard first, galloping 75 yards for the touchdown. In the fourth quarter, he trotted 43 yards for a score. Scott finished the night with 235 yards rushing on 26 carries.

In the second quarter, Miller hauled in a 10-yard pass from Chris Epperly to break a 7-7 tie. He wrapped up the scoring in the final period with a 3-yard run.

Benji Linkous provided the only score for Glenvar when he returned a blocked punt 25 yards for a touchdown to tie the score in the second quarter.

Fort Chiswell 31, Floyd County 8: Gary Arnold rushed for four touchdowns and picked off two passes to help the Pioneers keep the Buffaloes winless in a non-district matchup in Floyd.

Arnold scored on runs of 7, 2, 48 and 7 yards for Fort Chiswell (4-3). Ernest Viars also scored for the Pioneers on a 38-yard run.

Craig Reed put the Buffaloes (0-6) on the board first with a 1-yard run.

Rural Retreat 34, Chilhowie 8: The Indians (4-2, 3-1) got a treat from their running backs, and in the process, got a big Hogoheegee District victory over the Warriors (3-4, 2-3) in Chilhowie.

Ronnie Six ran 11 times for 237 yards and a touchdown and Kenny Lethco carried 16 times for 96 yards and two touchdowns for Rural Retreat (4-2, 3-1). C.J. Patton and Archie Arnold also had touchdown runs for the Indians.

Daryl Peake threw a 4-yard touchdown pass to Blake Mason to account for the Chilhowie touchdown.

Bassett 14, Magna Vista 3: Carl Watkins carried 27 times for 155 yards, leading the Bengals past the Warriors in a Piedmont District game in Bassett.

The Bengals (3-3, 3-2) broke on top 6-0 when Joe Haynes recovered a fumble in the Magna Vista end zone. After the Warriors closed to 6-3 on John Tunnel's 30-yard field goal, Bassett took control with Watkins' 3-yard touchdown run and a two-point conversion.

The Bengals' defense was superb, holding Magna Vista (2-4, 2-3) to 149 yards total offense.

George Wythe 21 Patrick Henry-Glade Spring 17: The Maroons shocked the Rebels in a Hogoheegee District game in Glade Spring.

George Wythe (2-5, 2-4) was led Jason Smith, with 142 yards on 27 carries.

Jason Boswell ran for 98 yards on 17 carries and Shane Ashby added 70 yards on 10 carries for PH (4-2, 4-1).

Auburn 42, Shawsville 20: Jason Phipps completed five of seven passes for 185 yards and four touchdowns as the Eagles rolled past the Shawnees to a Three Rivers District victory in Shawsville.

Phipps tossed a 12-yard pass to Conrad Hughes, a 75-yarder to Kenny Wojciechowski, a 55-yard scoring pass to Mike Bibb and an 18-yarder to Bibb.

Auburn led 29-20 at halftime and tacked on two touchdowns in the fourth quarter.

David Hughes had 18 carries for 176 yards and two touchdowns for the Eagles (4-3, 2-1). He had touchdown runs for 37 and 58 yards.

Scott Holloman had 13 carries for 112 yards and two touchdowns for Shawsville (2-4, 1-1). Quarterback Chris Graham completed 10 of 12 passes for 144 yards with two interceptions.

Fort Chiswell 31, Floyd County 8: Gary Arnold rushed for four touchdowns and picked off two passes to help the Pioneers keep the Buffaloes winless in a non-district matchup in Floyd.

Arnold scored on runs of 7, 2, 48 and 7 yards for Fort Chiswell (4-3). Ernest Viars also scored for the Pioneers on a 38-yard run.

Craig Reed put the Buffaloes (0-6) on the board first with a 1-yard run.

Chatham 46, Laurel Park 0: In Martinsville, the Cavaliers (4-2, 3-2) scored early and often and successfully converted two-point tries five out of six times as they overpowered the Lancers (1-5, 1-4).

Three times Chatham capitalized on Laurel Park turnovers, including two blocked punts returned for touchdowns and an interception run back for a score. Chris Vaden scored on one of the blocked punts and twice on conversions.

Henri Fitzgerald scored twice, including a 91-yard scoring strike from Desmond Pruitt to lead Chatham. Fitzgerald also accounted for one of the five Cavaliers conversions.

William Byrd 35, Carroll County 7: Quarterback Frank English and receiver Michael Berry connected for two touchdown passes in a non-district victory over the Cavaliers.

English and Berry connected on 55-yarder in the first quarter and a 60-yarder in the second to push William Byrd (5-0) to a 35-0 halftime lead.

Trey Manning scored on a 67-yard run in the fourth quarter for visiting Carroll County (3-4). He finished with 126 yards on 10 carries.

English completed six of eight passes for 190 yards. Four of those went to Berry. Ben Smith rushed for 67 yards for the Terriers.
