`CADFAEL' AUTHOR ELLIS PETERS DIES

Author Ellis Peters, creator of the medieval sleuth Brother Cadfael, died early Saturday after a stroke, her literary agent said. She was 82.

Peters, whose real name was Edith Pargeter, died in her sleep at her home near Shrewsbury in western England, agent Deborah Owen said.

Her home was the setting for the "Brother Cadfael Chronicles," a series of 12th-century murder mysteries, which became international best sellers and were translated into more than 20 languages.

Peters also was the author of many novels under her own name and several translations from the Czech language.

She began writing crime crime stories in 1959 and in 1977 published her first medieval mystery featuring the Benedictine monk, Brother Cadfael, whose skills as an herbalist, along with his intellect and powers of observation, served him well as a detective.
