UMBC ENDS RADFORD'S WIN STREAK

Maryland-Baltimore County scored two second-half goals to defeat Radford University 2-1 in a Big South Conference men's soccer game Saturday in Radford, ending the Highlanders' seven-match winning streak.

Radford (10-2-1 overall, 3-1 conference) took the early lead on a goal by Che Henderson. UMBC (9-6, 4-1) responded with goals from Ted Lawler and Gheran King.

Highlanders goalies made seven saves on the day as the Retrievers outshot Radford 15-11.

In Lexington, Phillip Harper scored with 32 seconds left in regulation as VMI defeated East Carolina 2-1 in a non-district contest.

Ben Kjome put VMI on the board with a goal in the first half. The Pirates (2-11) countered in the second half with a goal by Bret Altheisser.

John Weeks made four saves for VMI as the Keydets (6-8) eclipsed their victory total of a year ago.

In Ashland, the Randolph-Macon men's team scored a goal with 80 seconds remaining to defeat Washington and Lee 2-1 in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference game.

Randolph-Macon (9-5, 5-1) got the winning goal from David Brown off an assist from Mike Henning. Washington and Lee (6-5, 3-5) got its lone goal from Sam Chase, the ODAC's leading scorer. Mark Cola made eight stops for the Yellow Jackets, and Garry Hill made 19 saves for the Generals.

Hollins routed Wesleyan (Ga.) 10-0 in a non-conference women's game at Hollins.

Beth Coughlin and Keri Pitman scored three goals apiece for Hollins (4-10) and Rachel Scanlon added two more in the blowout. Wesleyan's record dropped to 1-9.

CROSS COUNTRY W&L sweeps state meet

The Washington and Lee men's and women's teams took first place in the Virginia Division II and III State Meet in Newport News.

In the men's division, senior Brad Paye was one of four consecutive runners to cross the finish line, helping the Generals capture their first state title. Paye came in third overall, with a time of 26 minutes, 3 seconds. He was followed by Jason Callen (26:20), Will Olson (26:30) and Taylor Schultz (27:01).

All five Washington and Lee runners earned All-State honors. The Generals finished with 26 points, Roanoke was second at 55 and Christopher Newport placed third with 80 points. Roanoke's Jamey Maybury finished second overall in 25:55.

In the women's division, senior Josephine Schaeffer easily won her fifth meet of the year and the 26th of her career as she blew away the field, helping the Generals defend their state title.

Schaeffer's time was 17:23, beating her closest competitor, teammate Natasha Dorofeeva, by nearly two minutes. Dorofeeva finished in 19:13. Carson Flowers finished third (19:48) and Nat Messmore finished seventh (20:12) to round out the Generals top-10 runners.

Schaeffer, Dorofeeva, Flowers and Messmore earned All-State honors as Washington and Lee finished with 23 points, followed by Christopher Newport (53). Sharon Huppert of Roanoke finished 12th in 20:54.

In Lynchburg, despite slow times because of damp conditions on the course, the men's and women's teams from Liberty dominated the Ron Hopkins Memorial Invitational.

Josh Cox finished third in 27:08 as the Liberty men finished with 59 points. VMI was second at 67.

Greg Cavaliere of the Lynchburg Track Club ran the 8-kilometer course in 26:39.

In the women's division, Jennifer Hodges placed second in 20:53 as Liberty tallied 31 points to edge James Madison by one point. Kiersten Hodges of JMU completed the five-kilometer race in 20:40.

In Eugene Ore., the Virginia Tech men's team finished fourth of 15 teams at the Jeff Drenth Memorial. John Hawthorne, a former Cave Spring High School standout, finished ninth overall in 25:01 to lead the Hokies. Oregon won the event with 31 points and Virginia Tech amassed 143 points.

In Greenville, S.C., the Virginia Tech women's team finished sixth among 23 teams at the Furman Invitational.

Junior Tracey Shea of Vienna finished 16th overall in 19:16 and Jennifer Pohlig of Draper finished 35th in 19:55 as the Hokies scored 194 points.
