New River broadcaster named to panel

CHRISTIANSBURG - David R. Roederer, vice president and general manager of New River Media Group, operator of radio stations in Blacksburg, Christiansburg and Pulaski, has been named to the Small/Medium Market Radio Committee of the National Association of Broadcasters.

The association is the nation's largest trade organization for radio and television stations. The committee participates in the association's policy making.

United Cities Gas|

names manager|

CHRISTIANSBURG - Glenn Kitchens is the new manager of operations for the Blacksburg/Radford/Pulaski/Wytheville area of United Cities Gas Company.

Previously, Kitchens was manager of the Johnson City, Tenn., operations for the company. Before that, he managed the Gaffney, S.C., operations.

In the New River Valley, Kitchens will be responsible for day-to-day operations, construction, sales and service.

United Cities distributes natural and propane gas to 325,000 customers in 10 states.

Force Inc. to assist|

with Olympic traffic|

CHRISTIANSBURG - Force Inc., a Christiansburg maker of fiber-optic and electronic equipment, will help with traffic control during the Summer Olympics in Atlanta next year.

The company, which provided video equipment for broadcasting the downhill ski events during the 1994 Winter Olympics in Norway, will provide fiber-optic video links to monitor vehicle traffic during the summer games.

Olympics organizers will keep tabs on the heavy vehicle traffic they expect through a network of 354 video cameras, which will use video links provided by Force. The fiber-optic-based system is immune to lightning, and thus will monitor traffic even in bad weather.

BLACKSBURG - Local employers of people with disabilities will be recognized at an Oct. 31 luncheon at the Blacksburg Holiday Inn, sponsored by the local Network for Employment of People with Disabilities, an umbrella group that coordinates the efforts of area schools, the state Department of Rehabilitative Services, and Community Services, and other organizations.

The speaker will be Juan Carlos Rivera, a rehabilitative engineer with the Department of Rehabilitative Services, who will talk about "Assistive Technology and Reasonable Accommodations in the Workplace."

Area employers are invited to attend the event, and offer nominees for appreciation awards for people and employers who have offered jobs to mentally and physically disabled people. For more information, call Mary Todd at 231-9291.

Tickets to the luncheon are $8, and enrollment is limited to 200 people.

BLACKSBURG - Virginia Tech's business college will feature Tom Donaldson, a business professor at Georgetown University, during its sixth annual Business Ethics Symposium Wednesday.

Donaldson will talk about "Values in Tension: Business Ethics Away From Home" at 1 p.m. in 1045 Pamplin Hall.

An open discussion is planned among Tech business faculty and graduate students on "Hypernorms, Bribery and Business Ethics" at 10 a.m. in 1045 Pamplin Hall.

CHRISTIANSBURG - The Greater Blacksburg Chamber of Commerce's monthly mixer will be Thursday, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., at the Colony Park Office Complex.

Reservations are due by Monday.

The Christiansburg-Montgomery County Chamber of Commerce's monthly After Hours mixer is set for Thursday, Oct. 26, from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Blacksburg Holiday Inn.

The Holiday Inn and Lewis-Gale Counseling Center will host the event, which will include hors d'oeuvres, beer and wine.
