TAR HEELS NIP RADFORD

North Carolina scored three goals in the first 26 minutes, then the 21st-ranked Tar Heels held on for a 3-2 victory over Radford in a men's soccer game in Chapel Hill, N.C.

Daniel Kulenic, Hector Suarez and Carey Talley had the goals for the Tar Heels (8-5). Ian Spooner and Eric Rarus were the scorers for the Highlanders (10-3-1).

Freshman Karin Treese scored in the 57th minute and Washington and Lee (8-3) made it stand for a 1-0 victory over Haverford in a women's soccer game in Lexington.

Beth Mozena made two saves to record the shutout for the Generals (8-3). Haverford is 10-5.

The Virginia Tech women's team reached the championship round of the ITA East Regional Team Championships before falling to Richmond 5-2 in Princeton, N.J.

Two Roanoke youth soccer boys' teams won championships at the Virginia State Championships held at various locations around the state. The Roanoke Star U-16 White team defeated the Southwest Lightning 3-1 in Roanoke on two goals by Scott Lofranco and a goal by Dustin Morse. The Roanoke Star U-15 White outlasted the Braddock Road Blue Jays 2-1 in overtime in Braddock Road, Va. Wesley Savage and Nathan Thomas each had goals for the White.

The Salem Sabres boys' U-12 Maroon team finished second in its division of the Appalachian Fall Festival soccer tournament during the weekend in Kingsport, Tenn.

The Sabres went 2-1 in the round-robin format behind four goals from Josh Bromfield and two from Noah Via. Patrick Robinette, Ryan Hornady and goalie Nick Capito anchored the defense.

Nick Varney, a former Glenvar High School standout, shot a 3-under-par 69 to tie for third in the first round of individual play at the Stetson Intercollegiate golf tournament.

Ed Dickinson came in first place in the expert division at the Richwood Fall Classic mountain bike race held in Richwood, W. Va. Roanoke's Kyle Inman won the veterans division. with a time of 1:06.21.

Dickinson, of Roanoke, ran the course in a time of 57 minutes, 15 seconds. Another Roanoker, Ed Shepherd came in third in the expert division in a time of 1:10.10. Kyle Inman won the veterans division with a time of 1:06.21.
