BOONES MILL VOTES TO END TOLLS TO ROANOKE

Boones Mill telephone customers have voted to eliminate long-distance toll charges to Roanoke in return for higher monthly fees.

The State Corporation Commission said Monday that 84.7 percent of the 1,005 customers who returned ballots said they would be willing to pay higher monthly charges instead of toll charges. Only 182 voted to keep the present system. About 64 percent of the ballots were returned.

Roanoke customers will be notified of any cost increases and given a chance to comment.

Boones Mill customers with flat-rate residential service would see an increase of $5.22, from $11.56 to $16.78, in their monthly bills if the extended local calling service is implemented. The impact would be smaller on Roanoke customers.
