LESPERANCE AND GLENVAR WIN GOLF TITLES

Glenvar's Tommy Lesperance defeated Eric Cooke of Highland in an extra-hole playoff to earn medalist honors and lead the Highlanders to the Region C golf title Monday at Countryside.

Lesperance shot a 79 as Glenvar finished at 331. Giles was second at 339, followed by Highland (345) and George Wythe (351).

Glenvar and Giles will advance to the Group A tournament Oct.23-24 at the Homestead, along with six individual qualifiers. They are: Cooke, Robert Boone of Galax, Brian Love of George Wythe, Narrows' James Blankenship, Aaron Duncan of James River and Rocky Waybright of Highland County. (Results in Scoreboard. B2)

In other golf:

Richlands shot a team score of 330 to win the Region 4 tournament at the par 72, 6,022-yard Blue Ridge Country Club course.

Gate City placed second with a 336. Both teams qualify for the Group AA tournament.

Blacksburg's Wes Martin was the individual medalist with a 76. (Results in Scoreboard. B2)

Richlands' top four scorers were Gabriel Harmon (80), Christopher Dye (82), Brandon Hay (83) and Jody Munsey (85). Gate City's scorers were Andy Shelton (82), Andy Jones (83), Jerry Wilmoth (84) and Jesse Hensley (87).

Along with Martin, Harmon, Dye and Shelton, the individual state qualifiers included Mike Minnick of Virginia-Bristol (78), Chris Fly of Tazewell (78), Dale Gilbert of Lee (79), Charles Green of Tazewell (83) and Marion's Matt Hanshaw (83).

Tazewell placed third overall with a 345, followed by Blacksburg (350), Abingdon (355) and Christiansburg (358).

Former Glenvar High School standout Nick Varney, playing for North Carolina-Greensboro, fell from third to sixth place during the second day of the Stetson Intercollegiate tournament in Deland, Fla.

Varney shot a 72 en route to a two-day total of 141. Michael Way, a teammate of Varney, is in first place at 138 heading into the final round today.

R.J. Weaver of Ferrum shot a 74 to stake the Panthers to the lead on the first day of the Ferrum Invitational at Draper Valley in Pulaski County.

Ferrum finished at 315, followed by Washington and Lee at 318 and Lynchburg at 319. Roanoke (337) is ninth and Ferrum's B team (365) is 13th. The 36-hole tournament concludes today.

Roanoke women win in soccer

Lori Clark's sixth goal of the season gave Roanoke College a 2-1 victory over Haverford in a women's soccer game in Salem.

Haverford's Nicole Zito and the Maroons' Jayme O'Malley scored first-half goals before Clark knocked in the game-winner in the 74th minute as Roanoke improved its record to 12-4.

Aaron Marchetti of the Virginia Tech men's tennis team has clinched a berth in the pre-qualifying round at the All-American Tournament, the national tournament for the fall season in Austin, Texas.

Marchetti defeated Wil Henson of Purdue 7-5, 6-2 and Paul Leon of Louisiana State 6-4, 7-5, then lost to Albin Polonyi 4-6, 7-6, 6-1.

Oliver Mayo became the first Tech tennis player to be awarded a seed, receiving the No.9 spot.

Laura Dickinson, a ninth-grader from Patrick Henry High School, knocked off the two top-seeded tennis players in the Roanoke Valley District to win the singles title at River's Edge.

Dickinson defeated Cave Spring's Alicia Todd 3-6, 7-5, 6-4 in a semifinal match and went on to beat undefeated Priya Acharya of Pulaski County 2-6, 7-6 (7-1), 6-4 in the final.
