Venture Out at Tech

BLACKSBURG - The Venture Out program of Virginia Tech invites students, faculty, staff and community members to participate in their outdoor adventures. Trips scheduled for late fall include caving, hiking, and hang gliding.

The program will also sponsor a longer trip canoeing through the Everglades National Park in Florida and a hiking and skiing trip in the White Mountains of New Hampshire.

The Venture Out Program's nonprofit status keeps the cost of the trips to a minimum.

Those interested in these activities can visit the office in 117B Squires Student Center. For more information call, Molly Lucier at 231-3750.

Art show in Pulaski

PULASKI - "New River Collects," an art exhibition drawn from several sources, is on display at the Fine Arts Center for the New River Valley.

It includes works from private collections throughout the region, the Wilderness Road Regional Museum, and the center's permanent collection.

Among the artists represented are John James Audubon, Joan Miro, Auguste Renoir, Rufina Tamayo, Howard Finster, Walter Biggs and Frank Rampolla, as well as regional artists Dean Carter, Joni Pienkowski, Mary Tarr Whitehurst, Jim Yeatts, Vance Miller, Howard Little and Eric Fitzpatrick.

The exhibition is designed to show that many individuals in the New River Valley collect art and encourage others to do the same.

Betty Sadler said she and her husband, John, do much of their collecting from artists they know. "It's like having old friends on the walls, surrounding us," she said. "We cannot imagine not collecting." She and Donia Eley acted as curators for the show.

The exhibit includes several three-dimensional works such as an antique Vietnamese burial urn, Roman marble carving, and a sculpture by John Rogers. It will be on display at the center through Nov. 4.
