BLACKSBURG - District Ranger David Collins has announced the policy regarding closure of Forest Service roads in the Blacksburg Ranger District of the George Washington and Jefferson National Forest.
Gates were opened Oct. 15, and will remain open through Dec. 15., on the Porterfield, Nettle Hollow, South Dismal, Kelly Flats and No Business roads. Should resource damage occur, the gates will immediately be closed.
Partnership training
CHRISTIANSBURG - Youth-Adult Partnership Training is Oct. 28, 8:30 a.m to 3:30 p.m., at St. Paul United Methodist Church, 220 W. Main St. Training is open to partnership members and people who are interested in the partnerships.
The program is sponsored by the New River Valley Prevention Coalition Advisory Board and Community Education and Prevention Services, a division of the NRV Community Services Board. Call 382-8835.
Town leaf collection
BLACKSBURG - The town will begin leaf collection Oct. 31. Early collection will be done from Oct. 23 through Oct. 30, in areas that experience early leaf drop. Leaves are collected as follows: Oct. 31, southwest quadrant, Nov. 7, southeast quadrant, Nov. 14, northeast quadrant, and Nov. 21, northwest quadrant. Each quadrant will be visited twice. Town crews will begin to revisit quadrants where leaves have continued to fall on Nov. 30.
Leaves should be bagged and placed on the curb by the first day of collection in each quadrant. Residents may call 961-1142 to have bagged leaves collected within two days, regardless of collection schedule. Leaves requested for compost are delivered free to residents within 5 miles of Blacksburg.

CHRISTIANSBURG - The Montgomery-Floyd Regional Library will hold an information meeting on Wednesday, Oct. 25, at 7 p.m., at the Christiansburg library meeting room, 125 Sheltman St. for all non-profit organizations in the New River Valley interested in having a home page on the World Wide Web.
The library will aid in the creation and posting of these multimedia home pages on the library's WWW host computer on the Blacksburg Electronic Village. Organizational information can be easily updated and maintained by the members of the organization. Call Steve Helm, 381-6824.
Flu vaccinations
DUBLIN - The Medicine Shoppe in Dublin will offer flu vaccinations Tuesday, Oct. 24, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m and Saturday, Nov. 4, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
The shots are $10 each, and free to Medicare Part B recipients. A portion of the proceeds will benefit the American Lung Association. Call the shop at 674-5693 for more information.
Poetry, prose readings
RADFORD - Barbara Ewell and Chelsea Adams, both Radford University faculty members, will read from "Rose Is a Rose Is a Rose Is a Rose," selections of original poetry and prose, Tuesday, Oct. 24, at 7:30 p.m., in the university's Flossie Martin Gallery.
Ewell has taught at the university since 1989 and has published poems in the anthology "Saturday's Women," the Conservative Review and several local literary magazines.
Adams has published in anthologies and in Poet Lore and Albany Review. The two will be joined by faculty members Anne Bromley and Rita Riddle. Liz Gregg, a student at Blacksburg High School, also will read original poems. For more information, call 831-5324.
RU honors recital
BLACKSBURG - Radford University's music program will present a concert of classical music through various media on Friday, Oct. 20, at 8 p.m. in Preston Auditorium.

BLACKSBURG - The Salvation Army is taking applications for Christmas assistance.
Pulaski residents may apply Monday, Oct. 23, and Tuesday, Oct. 24, from 10 a.m.-4 p.m., at the Salvation Army Thrift Store, 306 E. Main St., Pulaski.
Giles residents may apply Wednesday, Oct. 25, from 10 a.m.-4 p.m., at the Pearisburg Community Center, Wenona Ave.
Montgomery County and Radford residents may apply Thursday, Oct. 26, and Friday, Oct. 27, 10 a.m.-4 p.m., at The Salvation Army Thrift Store, 23 E. Main Street, Christiansburg.
Applicants should bring a form of identification with current address shown (driver's license, etc.), income verification (check stubs, etc.),children's Social Security cards, children's birth certificates, and children's clothing sizes. Call 980-2400.
