ROCKBRIDGE SURPRISES NORTHSIDE

Carmen Hambrick scored the go-ahead basket with less than a minute to go and Natalie Wallace sank two free throws in the waning seconds to seal Rockbridge County's first-ever Blue Ridge District girls' high school basketball victory, surprising Northside 57-56 Tuesday night.

With 30 seconds on the clock, Hambrick sank an inside shot to put the Wildcats (3-10 overall, 1-4 district) ahead 55-54. After a turnover, Wallace was fouled and made both free throws with only seven ticks left to ice the win before an energetic Wildcats crowd.

Northside (8-8, 2-3) inbounded the ball the length of the court for a lay-up as time expired, but it was too little too late as the Vikings suffered their third district loss this season.

Wallace, a senior, led the Wildcats with 14 points, eight rebounds, six steals and three assists. Kate Ides scored 15 points and grabbed 11 rebounds, and Tonya Clements added 11 points and 10 rebounds. Lindsay Dameron added a dozen points in the win.

Crystal Barrett led Northside with 16 points and Amy Heath added 14.
