SMYTH WRECK KILLS TEEN-AGER

A 16-year-old Marion boy was killed Tuesday night in a single-vehicle accident in Smyth County east of Marion.

James Ryan Owens was driving a sport-utility vehicle that apparently ran off the shoulder of U.S. 11 near the Atkins community, said Trooper B.H. Martin. When it came back onto the roadway, the vehicle flipped. Owens, who was not wearing a seat belt, was thrown from the vehicle.

Owens died at Smyth County Community Hospital in Marion.

He was a junior at Marion Senior High School and a member of the varsity basketball team.
