THE TIPOFF

GOOD BEGINNING: The Kyncl String Quartet, from the Czech Republic, will kick off the Roanoke Valley Chamber Music Society's 1995-96 season with selections from Beethoven, Mendelssohn and Dvorak. The program gets underway tonight at 8 in Roanoke College's Olin Hall. Tickets are $13; $6.50 for people 18 or younger. Call 774-2899.

FUNK FACTOR: George Clinton and the P-Funk All Stars, featuring Parliament/Funkadelic, will rock Radford University's Dedmon Center on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $10 in advance for Radford students; $14 for the general public. Call 831-5420.

BUFFALO BIDDING: Something for everyone is promised at Hollow Hill Farm's fourth annual buffalo auction and festival, starting at 9 a.m. Saturday: American Indian tales, dancing and crafts; mountain men's black powder, primitive bow, knife and tomahawk competitions; old-time fiddling, guitar and band contests; early American crafts; and a live buffalo auction, offering 60 carefully selected breeding animals. FILM FEST: More than 60 films will be screened during the eighth annual Virginia Festival of American Film, starting Thursday and running through Oct. 29 in Charlottesville. Film professionals, scholars and writers will lead discussions following each film. Museum exhibits, parties, theme movies and a three-day workshop by film critic Roger Ebert will be offered. A special guest on Oct. 26 will be Fay Wray of "King Kong" fame. Call (800) 924-FEST.

ALL ABOUT AFRICA: Drumming and dancing, children's workshops, African-style cuisine and a gallery talk by the curator of African Art at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts will be among the activities marking the official opening of the ``Spirit of the Motherland'' African art exhibition at the Art Museum of Western Virginia, Center in the Square, Roanoke. The reception will be Saturday from 2-4 p.m. in the museum's first floor galleries. Children's workshops are from 12:30-1:30 p.m. and from 2:30-3:30 p.m. It's all free. Call 224-1201.

Then, beginning at 6 p.m. on Saturday, the Roanoke-Kisumu Sister Cities' Harambee Gala will bring African music, dance, fashions, food, folklore, artifacts and Swahili lessons to the business/science auditorium at Virginia Western Community College.
