Mack told a relative Thursday that he had killed his girlfriend, left her body in Roanoke County, and planned to kill himself, according to Roanoke police.
He made good on that plan shortly before 5 p.m. Thursday by shooting himself in the head near his sister's house in the 400 block of Hanover Avenue Northwest. Mack, 26, died almost immediately after he was taken to Roanoke Memorial Hospital. Police did not give Mack's address.
Mack also was arrested last weekend on charges of shooting into an occupied vehicle after an unidentified male called authorities, but police said no other details on the arrests were available.
Roanoke County police discovered a woman's body in some high grass on the property of Adams Construction Co. in the Valleypointe Corporate Center off Peters Creek Road. The victim had not been identified Thursday night, pending notification of relatives.
Lt. T.W. Haynes said the victim apparently died of at least one gunshot wound.
Police brought in canine units to search the area, a small clearing on the company's property. The dogs found at least two shells from a gun, police said. Haynes said an Adams Construction employee also helped search the area.
The woman's body was carried out by ambulance just before 10 p.m.
Police continued to search for evidence, using the dogs and metal detectors. Haynes could not confirm when or where the victim was killed.
Roanoke police recovered a 9mm handgun with Mack's body.
Mack was found a few feet from Carver Street in the back yard of a Hanover Avenue residence. William Kasey, 18, who was inside the house, said he heard a gunshot, ran outside, and saw Mack's body. He remembers witnesses shouting at him to call police.
Mack's sister, Dorothy Mack, said her brother came to her house Thursday.
She said "he was showing remorse about everything." The sister wouldn't elaborate but said he was really upset. "He was saying she was gone."
Mack said her brother then left the house and went outside.
Just before Larry Mack shot himself, she said, he "was just crying."
"He said he didn't mean it."
"I know he's been having some problems" with his girlfriend, she said. "They've been going at each other."
She said the two had dated for a couple of years.
