The Campaign is an effort by Virginia Tech men - students, staff and faculty - to demonstrate their support for ending men's violence against women.
The White Ribbon Campaign began in 1991 in Canada on the anniversary of the 1990 "Montreal Massacre." In that incident, a distraught male student murdered 14 women at a Montreal university. The assailant believed that his opportunities were being taken away by women. The White Ribbon Campaign spread throughout Canada and to many universities and communities in the U.S.
Virginia Tech White Ribbon Campaign organizers are asking all men at Tech to wear a white ribbon from Monday, Oct. 23, through Sunday. Oct. 29, to call for an end to men's violence against women. Ribbons will be available Monday through Wednesday in Squires Student Center's first-floor booth, in Johnson Student Center's third-floor lounge, War Memorial Gym, the Black Cultural Center and the University Counseling Center.
Volunteers are needed. Men are asked to volunteer an hour of their time to distribute ribbons; call Robert Miller at the University Counseling Center.
