Community Connections

Owners: Michael and Amy Price

Location: 415 Poplar Lane, Pearisburg

Phone: Business and fax, 921-2434; home 921-1328

Products and Services: The Prices offer online data base searching for scholarships and other types of financial aid for college students. About $6.6 billion in private financial-aid money goes unclaimed each year, they say, enough for $600 for every college student. Their service, through a Washington firm that continually updates a list of 150,000 sources, is a way to tap into that market. Some financial aid sources earmark their money for specific types of people based on their interests, abilities, accomplishments, geographic location or their parents' activities and cannot find qualified students. Many sources do not require financial need, and age or previous grades are not always a factor.

Fees: $39.95 for each search. Updates within two years are available for a reduced fee.

Owners' Biographies: The Prices, both 32, are just starting Community Connections, and they have big hopes for it. They are also beginning a customized book service for children and may expand into a job search and resume service, a parent-teacher hotline and a senior-citizen and child monitoring service. The home business provides a way for them to earn money and keep an eye on their three children, ages 3 to 8.
