PH, KNIGHTS WILL SQUARE OFF IN VOLLEYBALL

Patrick Henry and Cave Spring will play Tuesday at 7 p.m. at William Fleming to settle the Roanoke Valley District volleyball title.

The teams split regular season district victories and tied for the championship. The winner of Tuesday's game also receives an automatic berth in the Group AAA Northwest Region while the loser will have to win the district tournament to make the region.

Messiah scored four second-half goals it shut out Roanoke 5-0 in a non-conference men's soccer game in Grantham, Pa.

Chris Tassy led Messiah (16-1-1) with two goals, both in the second half. Roanoke (8-8) got 12 saves from goalkeeper Rick Keeley.

Senior Ian Spooner scored four goals in his final home game to lead Radford past Charleston Southern 6-0 in a Big South Conference matchup.

Radford (11-3-2 overall, 4-1-1 Big South) outshot Charleston Southern 22-2. Highlander goalies Sacha Drouin and David Robbins combined to post the shutout.

Kristin Scelfo had a goal and an assist for Notre Dame of Maryland, pacing the Gators to a 2-1 victory over Washington and Lee in non-conference women's soccer in Lexington.

Washington and Lee (9-4) scratched the scoring column in the 68th minute on a goal by Karin Treese. Corina Riismandel scored the other goal for Notre Dame (9-4).

Susan Saulter had three goals and two assists in the Sweetbriar Invitational to break Ferrum's career scoring record as the Panthers downed Villa Julie (Md.) 6-0. Saulter now had 64 points, five more than Panthers' assistant coach Carrie Early.

Cindy Rinehart had one goal and one assist for Ferrum and Megan Turner and Daniella Giusto each scored a goal. The Panthers outshot Villa Julie 35-3.

Methodist, ranked 15th, defeated Roanoke 3-0 in a non-conference women's soccer game at Roanoke.

Methodist (9-3) outshot the Maroons 15-1. Candace Croal, Casey Nuckols and Alvy Styles scored for Methodist. Roanoke is 12-5.

The Virginia Tech women's soccer team came from behind to tie Xavier 2-2 in an Atlantic 10 Conference matchup in Cincinnati.

Tech goals were scored by Denise Williams and Katie Irish. Sophomore goalie Hope Handley tied an Atlantic 10 record for saves in a season with 160.

Roanoke's Billy King finished in a four-way tie for 46th at the PGA Senior Club Championship in West Palm Beach, Fla.

Bob Irving of Carefree, Ariz., won the title and the $14,000 first prize with a three-round total of 7-under-par 209 at the Golf & Country Club's Legend course. King, the head pro at Blue Hills, finished with a 76-68-77-221 total to earn $897.

Washington and Lee's women's doubles team of Natalia Garcia and Julie Ayers beat Ohio Wesleyan in the Division III championships and defeated the Division II champs from Cal-Bakersfield at the Rolex Championships in Boca Raton, Fla.

After defeating the doubles duo of Shelly Smart and Kristin Sherrill from Ohio Wesleyan in three sets, Garcia and Ayers downed Rejina Csibi and Eszter Sersozo of Cal-Bakersfield 6-4, 6-4.

Washington and Lee senior All-America Josephine Schaeffer won her sixth race of the season as she outdistanced the women's cross country field at the Gettysburg Invitational. Schaeffer beat her closest competitor by 20 seconds, finishing in 18:21.

In the men's competition, Washington and Lee's Jason Callen finished fourth. Brad Paye and Taylor Schultz were 14th and 22nd respectively for the Generals.
