CAVS GAME NOTES

Virginia's inability to put points on the board Saturday, despite amassing 411 yards in total offense, can be attributed partly to penalties.

The Cavaliers were penalized eight times for 57 yards, including four illegal-procedure penalties and two 5-yard penalties for illegal formation, in a 17-16 loss to Texas.

Virginia had 50 plays to the Longhorns' 26 in the first half, but the Cavaliers' only touchdown of the game came on a 23-yard drive following a shanked punt.

There were three different occasions - two in the first half - when Virginia had apparent first downs in Texas territory that were nullified by penalty. The Cavaliers ended up punting all three times.

``There was one hold that hurt us,'' offensive coordinator Tom O'Brien said. ``I don't have a handle on the illegal procedures. One we jumped, one we rocked back, one we didn't snap the ball.

``I think Texas' quickness on defense had something to do with it. That's a big-league defense. [Defensive end Tony] Brackens is a great football player. There's nobody till we get to Florida State that rushes or can put pressure on you like he does.''

SWC CREW

Virginia head coach George Welsh said he couldn't remember agreeing to the Southwest Conference crew that called Saturday's game, but pointed out the flip side - that ACC officials will call next year's Texas-UVa game in Charlottesville.

LIKES HILLARY

Texas sophomore Michael Adams, mostly quiet until he caught two fourth-down passes for first downs, says in the Longhorns' media guide that Hillary Clinton is the person with whom he would want to be stranded on an island.

Adams subsequently received a letter from the First Lady, who informed Adams that her father and brother had played football at Penn State and that she was a big football fan.

``It was supposed to be funny,'' Adams said of the note in the media guide. ``So, I was thinking of something that would get attention. I was shocked that she saw it. I was even more shocked that she wrote a letter.''

STREAKS

Virginia, a two-point choice, has now lost 14 games in the 1990s in which it has been favored. ... Ronde Barber's first interception in five games (and third of the season) gave Virginia at least one interception in 25 consecutive games. ... Walt Derey, a junior tight end from Northside High School in Roanoke, scored the first touchdown of his career on a 1-yard reception in the second quarter. ... Tiki Barber's string of games with at least one rushing touchdown ended at nine, although he had his first 100-yard rushing game of the season.

NEXT OPPONENT

The Cavaliers (6-3 overall, 5-1 ACC) do not play again until Nov.2, a Thursday night, when they entertain top-ranked Florida State (7-0, 5-0). The Seminoles, also idle next Saturday, snapped Georgia Tech's four-game winning streak with a 42-10 victory in Tallahassee, Fla.
