EX-CONGRESSIONAL AIDE ARRESTED IN BANK HEIST

A bad wig and sunglasses couldn't conceal bank robbery suspect Thomas Springer's past as a congressional aide, the FBI said.

Springer is accused of stealing about $5,000 from a suburban Virginia bank Wednesday and reportedly is a suspect in two similar heists this year. He was convicted of three bank robberies in 1989 in Maryland.

Springer, 46, was press secretary to New York Republican Rep. Michael Forbes for a brief period this year, and worked for Rep. Toby Roth, R-Wisconsin, in the 1980s.

``This is one of the weirder ones,'' FBI spokeswoman Susan Lloyd said Friday.

``Here's a middle-aged guy who prior to age 40 apparently never had any problems,'' she said. ``And here he is a desperate man who needed money badly enough'' to rob a bank, Lloyd said.

Desperate and apparently indiscreet, police said. Springer was caught because an angry homeowner called police when he saw a man urinating on a lawn near the bank.
