The victory was the third in a row for W&L (3-2-1). Sewanee's record slipped to 1-5.
The Generals took a 13-0 lead in the first quarter behind a 2-yard run from Fischer and a pair of Thomas field goals, but the Tigers came back with two second-quarter touchdowns to take a 14-13 lead.
Washington and Lee regained the lead on the first drive of the second half when freshman wide receiver Chas Chastain picked up a fumble by teammate Seth McKinley and raced 32 yards for a touchdown.
Thomas' three field goals tied the W&L single-game record. Cary Green kicked three in a game against Bridgewater in 1967.
