GEORGE WYTHE HOLDS ON TO DEFEAT HOLSTON

George Wythe scored a late touchdown and then made a defensive stand to defeat Holston 21-20 in a Hogoheegee District football game Monday night in Wytheville.

The Maroons' Jason Smith scored on a 25-yard run with 2:37 left, and Bryant Jones added his second extra point to give Wythe (3-5 overall, 3-3 in the district) a one-point lead.

The drama was hardly over. Holston (4-3, 4-2) came back and appeared ready to win the game when quarterback Tom South was hit at the Wythe 1 by James Johnson and Jim Runyon on the game's final play to preserve the Maroons' victory.

Before that, South had scored a pair of touchdowns and kicked two extra points. His miss midway in the third quarter of a point-after proved to be the difference.

Martinsville 21, Chatham 6: At Martinsville, Manti Venable rushed 14 times for 176 yards and two touchdowns as the Bulldogs created a three-way tie for first place in the Piedmont District with a victory over Chatham.

Martinsville (5-2, 5-1) is tied for first place with Fieldale-Collinsville and Dan River. The Bulldogs play at Dan River on Friday.

Rasheem Penn added a touchdown for the Bulldogs, who had 262 yards rushing and none passing out of their Wing-T attack.
