CROSSING GUARDS OK'D; WOLF-DOG HEARING SET

Montgomery County will hire two crossing guards to protect students using busy Virginia 8 to reach Riner Elementary School and Auburn High School.

The Montgomery County Board of Supervisors unanimously agreed Monday to appropriate $2,200 to the county Sheriff's Office to hire the guards. The initiative came as a result of residents' requests, including a petition with a couple hundred names, said Supervisor Henry Jablonski.

In other items Monday, the board:

Set a Nov. 20 public hearing for a measure that would prohibit the possession of wolf-hybrid dogs in Montgomery County without the issuance of a special permit by the Board of Supervisors. The proposed measure would not apply in Christiansburg or Blacksburg.

The state Department of Game and Inland Fisheries recently reclassified wolf-hybrids as domestic dogs, after three years of requiring special state permits. Montgomery County is considering a local restriction at the request of Health Department and animal control officials, who say wolf-dog hybrids cannot be effectively inoculated for rabies.

Rejected a policy to clarify the relationship between elected Board of Supervisors members and the county government staff. The policy would have prohibited a single supervisor from giving orders to employees obligating the county unless he was joined by three other board members. The measure failed 5-2, with supervisors Jim Moore and Joe Gorman in the minority. Most supervisors said there isn't enough of a problem to merit the measure.

Gave an OK to state-approved funding that has increased the county Sheriff's Office staff by four, for a total of 88 positions, all but four funded through the state Compensation Board. The $126,688 measure also appropriates money to provide a 4.55 percent pay increase for deputies beginning Dec. 1 and a 2.25 percent increase for the sheriff and other non-deputy employees.
