GOODE LETS PHOTO DO THE TALKING

Some Franklin County Democrats aren't sure whose side their state senator, Virgil Goode, is on when it comes to the House of Delegates race between Democrat Claude Whitehead and incumbent Republican Allen Dudley.

But Floyd County Democratic Chairwoman Ann Jones is sure.

Floyd and Franklin counties are the areas that overlap between Dudley's and Goode's districts.

Goode and Dudley may be from opposing political parties, but both are Franklin County natives, both still live in Rocky Mount and they were high school classmates.

When asked last week if he's endorsing his party-mate, Goode would not give Whitehead a public thumbs up.

So, Saturday night, at a Floyd County Democratic Party potluck, Jones, who had read stories about Goode's stance, confronted the senator.

``I said to him, `Virgil, say it isn't so,''' Jones said.

At that point, she said Goode pulled a Claude Whitehead button off her lapel, stuck it on his and took a joint photo with Whitehead and several other local candidates.

"That was good enough for me," Jones said of Goode's response. "Virgil has never been one to get up and publicly endorse candidates by name anyway."

Dudley gets windfall, of sorts

Last week, Dudley arrived at his campaign office on Main Street in Rocky Mount to find a load of 40 reconditioned computers.

The computers, surplus from state workers whose jobs were eliminated through downsizing, will be distributed to schools throughout Dudley's legislative district - a district that includes Floyd County, most of Franklin County, a slice of Pittsylvania County and the Moneta precinct in Bedford County.

Dudley said he put in a request for the computers earlier this year, but they weren't supposed to arrive until later.

But for political purposes, they arrived just at the right time.

"This is something good for the community - politics aside."
