GOLDEN EAGLES FLY BACK TO BEAT LANCERS

Erin Wolf made a three-point play with 17 seconds left to complete a 12-point second-half comeback as Staunton River defeated Amherst 45-44 in the Seminole District on Tuesday in Amherst.

Beth Davis then made a steal, and Staunton River (11-6 overall, 11-6 district) ran the remaining seconds off the clock to seal the win. Davis scored 10 points, and Missy Foxx led the Golden Eagles with 18 points.

Erin Johannes led Amherst (13-4, 13-4) with 24 points, but only four came in the fourth quarter, when the Lancers were outscored 18-8.

Lord Botetourt 56, Alleghany 51: Alleghany had upset on its mind, but Lord Botetourt made sure the thought didn't go any farther than the fourth quarter.

The Cavaliers rallied from a third-quarter deficit to beat the Mountaineers in Daleville and remain in contention for the Blue Ridge District title.

Sara Hicks scored eight of her 20 points in the fourth quarter, and Sarah Moore added five of her 25 as the duo scored all but two of the Cavaliers' points in the frame. Lord Botetourt outscored Alleghany 15-7 in the fourth to secure the victory.

The Cavaliers improved to 16-2 overall and 5-2 in league play. Alleghany dropped to 9-9 and 1-6.

Natasha Chapman led Alleghany with 17 points, and Katie Craft added 15.

William Byrd 70, Rockbridge County 26: The Terriers had 19 steals and 19 assists as they downed the Wildcats in the Blue Ridge District.

The Wildcats had 38 turnovers.

Byrd got 24 points from Cathy Smith and 12 from Sarah Moore. Tonia Clements led Rockbridge County with 10.

Castlewood 68, Rural Retreat 66: Kelly Sayler scored a game-high 26 points and Castlewood withstood an apparent buzzer-beating shot by Kristie Osborne that was disallowed to win the Hogoheegee District game in triple overtime in Rural Retreat.

Osborne hit a shot at the buzzer that would have tied the game and sent it into a fourth overtime, but officials ruled that the shot did not beat the buzzer.

Osborne and Jane Grubb each finished with 16 points for the Indians (11-4, 9-4). Mary Brewer, who hit a shot in regulation to tie the game, added 14.

Fieldale-Collinsville 51, Laurel Park 41: In Collinsville, the Cavaliers opened it up in the third quarter, outscoring Laurel Park by eight in the period, as Fieldale-Collinsville downed the Lancers in a Piedmont District contest.

Yvonne Hall led the Cavaliers (13-5, 12-3) with 17 points, five steals and four assists. Carrie Quinlan contributed 10 points and seven rebounds in the win.

Tazewell 34, Christiansburg 30: Tazewell limited host Christiansburg to an Amber Reed 3-pointer at the buzzer, outscoring the Blue Demons 9-3 down the stretch to win the non-district affair.

The Blue Demons, who were led by Lisa Dalton's 14 points, were outscored 10-0 at the free-throw line and had three visits to the stripe as compared with 20 for Tazewell.

Blacksburg 60, Graham 44: Blacksburg maintained a nine-point lead most of the game before tightening up the defense in the fourth quarter to pull away.

Blacksburg (7-12, 1-1) was led by April Rogers with 20 points and Andrea Feret with 14. Graham (6-12) picked up 20 points from Tamala Oakes.

Glenvar 52, Shawsville 23: The Highlanders blanked the Shawnees (9-8) in the first quarter and rolled to the non-district victory.

Glenvar was led by Erica Hale's 16 points and 12 from Amanda Rydell.

Parry McCluer 89, Highland 33: In Buena Vista, Lindsey Coleman led the Fighting Blues to a 16-point first-quarter lead as they crushed Pioneer District foe Highland.

Coleman, a sophomore, scored 15 of her 27 points in the opening period.

Nikki Barger pumped in 15 points ,and Clarrisa Johnson chipped in 12 points and 11 assists for the Fighting Blues (10-6, 7-3).

Magna Vista 47, Bassett 42: Tanesia Kellam scored 15 points to lead three Magna Vista players in double figures as the Warriors (10-7, 10-5) held off host Bassett to take sole possession of second place in the Piedmont District.

Bassett (10-6, 9-6) was plagued by poor free-throw shooting, making only 3-of-8 in the fourth quarter and 12-of-21 for the game.

The Bengals were led by Heather Miller's 17 points.

Covington 57, Bath County 38: In Hot Springs, visiting Covington fell behind in the first quarter, but took advantage of numerous Bath County turnovers to topple the Chargers in a Pioneer District game.

JoAnn Helton led Covington with 21 points. Michelle Jeter added 10.

Melanie Woods led Bath County (6-9, 5-4) with 14 points, and Suzanna Shanks chipped in 10.

Fort Chiswell 41, Rocky Gap 35: The Pioneers beat the Eagles for the second night in a row in a Mountain Empire District contest at Rocky Gap.

Fort Chiswell won 54-37 on Monday at Fort Chiswell.

Rocky Gap held a five-point lead heading into the fourth quarter, but leading scorer Amanda Clark (19 points) fouled out with 3:20 left. Kriston Harmon took over from there, making seven free throws in the last 31/2 minutes to seal the win for the Pioneers.

Tuesday's games

Jefferson Forest 64, Liberty 58:At Forest, Jefferson Forest held off Liberty for a Seminole District victory.

The Minettes (13-4, 13-4) were led by Sue Cowlbeck with a game-high 19 and Felicia Miller with 15.

William Byrd 54, Blacksburg 41: Cathy Smith scored 22 points to lead the Terriers past the Indians in a non-district contest at Blacksburg.
