LORD BOTETOURT STYMIES UPSET BID BY ALLEGHANY

Alleghany had upset on its mind Tuesday night, but Lord Botetourt made sure the thought didn't go any further than the fourth quarter.

The Cavaliers rallied from a third-quarter deficit to beat the Mountaineers 56-51 in Daleville and remained in contention for the Blue Ridge District girls' basketball title.

Sara Hicks scored eight of her 20 points in the fourth quarter, and Sarah Moore added five of her 25 as the duo scored all but two of the Cavaliers' points in the frame. Lord Botetourt outscored Alleghany 15-7 in the fourth to secure the victory.

The Cavaliers improved to 16-2 overall and 5-2 in league play. Alleghany dropped to 9-9 and 1-6.

``[Alleghany] just played harder than we did for three quarters, and then we decided we wanted to win it,'' Lord Botetourt coach David Wheat said.

Hicks had 13 rebounds and kept the Cavaliers on top with her board work.

``Hicks, she cleaned the boards and got almost every defensive rebound in the foruth quarter, and we did a good job of getting it to her inside,'' Wheat said.

Natasha Chapman led Alleghany with 17 ponts, and Katie Craft added 15.

Salem 66, Northside 47: Sophomore Sarah Palmer and senior Shellie Johnson got Salem off to a great start as the Spartans avenged their only Blue Ridge District loss with a win over the Vikings at Salem.

Johnson scored 11 of her 21 points in the first quarter as the Spartans (13-3, 5-1) jumped out to a 10-point lead. Palmer added eight points in the quarter, including two 3-pointers, and finished with a game-high 23 points and 14 rebounds.

Northside, which defeated Salem 57-55 earlier this season, was led by Amy Heath, who scored 14 points. Crystal Barrett was held to nine.

James River 47, Craig County 22: Nakia Burrell scored 14 points, and the Knights outscored the Rockets 23-8 in the second half to pull away for a Pioneer District victory at New Castle.

Bonnie Boardwine led the Rockets (1-15, 1-9) with seven points.

William Byrd 70, Rockbridge County 26: The Terriers had 19 steals and 19 assists as they ripped the Wildcats in the Blue Ridge District.

The Wildcats also had 38 turnovers.

Byrd got 24 points from Cathy Smith and 12 from Sarah Moore. Tonia Clements led Rockbridge with 10.

Glenvar 52, Shawsville 23: Glenvar led 18-0 after the first quarter and routed the Shawnees in a non-district game.

The Highlanders were led by Erika Hale's 16 points and 12 from Amanda Rydell.

Shawsville (9-8) got eight from Megan Forster.
