VHSL CUTS DUAL WRESTLING TITLES

This will be the final year for Group AAA state dual wrestling championships.

At the Virginia High School League meetings, it was decided by the Group AAA board not to hold dual state wrestling championships beyond this winter. Franklin County finished second in the state dual meet last winter, losing to Great Bridge in the finals.

At the same time, it was decided that the VHSL will sponsor state swimming champioships for Group AAA schools starting next year.

A proposal was brought up at the meetings to divide the Group AAA schools into eight regions. Only the Northwest Region showed interest in the proposal and the idea was not adopted. However, the Northwest Region basically is splitting the region because of travel starting next year in most team sports competition.

Discussion was held about standardizing girls' sports seasons. Currently, Group AA and A schools hold basketball competition in the fall and volleyball in the fall, just the opposite of Group AAA schools.

Unprepared to make changes, the group tabled the idea.

There also was discussion about dividing other sports for state championships the way football is split now into six divisions. No group was ready to adopt the idea for other sports, but it will be considered for basketball.
