ADVANCE HALTED BY RURAL RETREAT

Rural Retreat blew a 10-point fourth-quarter lead but held on for a 62-57 non-district win Wednesday night over Grayson County in Independence.

The Indians (12-4) led by 10 after three quarters, but the lead was cut to one, 55-54, with two minutes left before holding on for the win. Kristie Osborne led the Indians with a game-high 15 points - 10 in the second half.

Grayson County (3-15) came back behind Lindsey Carico, who scored nine of her 13 points in the fourth quarter, including making 7 of 8 free throws. Dana Rae Whittington added 11 points and Emily Halsey had 10 for the Blue Devils.

Carroll County 46, Christiansburg 35: Denean Jessup scored eight of her 10 points in the second half as Carroll County opened up a 17-point lead and went on to defeat Christiansburg in a New River District game in Christiansburg.

Angie Farmer added nine points for the Cavaliers (12-6, 1-1) which led by nine at halftime.

The Blue Demons (6-12, 1-1) cut the lead to nine late in the game but could come no closer. Lisa Dalton led Christiansburg with 11 points - nine in the second half.

Auburn 70, Bland 31: Crystal Moles scored 10 of her game-high 19 points in the first quarter as Auburn jumped out to a 21-6 lead and rolled to the non-district win over host Bland.

Moles had 15 points in the first half as the Eagles (10-8) led by 25 at halftime. Laura Underwood added 14 points and Susan Wirt chipped in 10 for the Eagles.

Bland (0-13) was led by Jennifer Winters and Pachess Umbarger, who scored eight points each.

Tuesday's games

Tunstall 90, Martinsville 85, OT: The Trojans sank five of eight free-throw attempts in overtime as Tunstall upset the Bulldogs in a Piedmont District game in Dry Fork.

Melissa Dixon pumped in a game-high 38 points for the Trojans, 14 of which came in the fourth quarter. She also made six 3-pointers. Kim Ritch recorded 20 points for the Trojans, and Stephanie Brummfield added 11.

Tonya Martin and Erica Brandon led Martinsville with 19 points each. Jamie Farrington aided Martinsville (14-4, 12-3) with 15, and Keisha Mitchell chipped in 14. Tresita Holland added 12.

Floyd County 84, Auburn 48: The Buffaloes overcame the loss of Melissa Cantrell, their leading scorer, and routed the Eagles in a Three Rivers District contest in Riner.

Cantrell went down with an ankle injury in the second quarter and could be out for two weeks. She is expected to be back in time for the Three Rivers District tournament.

Julie Sowers led Floyd County (13-5, 5-0) with 20 points. Amy Vest contributed 11 and Jill Quesenberry and Sara Conner chipped in 10 each.

Crystal Moles, the district's leading scorer, had a team-high 13 points to match her 13 rebounds for Auburn (9-8, 3-3).

Radford 52, Giles 43: In Pearisburg, Charlee Taylor scored a game-high 25 points to lead the Bobcats (12-5, 5-1) past the Spartans in the Three Rivers District.

The Bobcats caused numerous Giles (7-10, 0-6) turnovers resulting in an early 14-7 first quarter lead.

George Wythe 56, Lebanon 46: In Lebanon, Tabitha Cook scored 18 points and grabbed 10 rebounds in the Maroons' Hogoheegee District victory. Megan Johnson added 10 for George Wythe, which hit 16 of 20 free throws after building an 11-point lead at intermission.

Grayson County 66, Bland 37: The Blue Devils used career-high scoring from junior Sally Werth and sophomore Allison Vaughan to knock off the Rockets in a Mountain Empire District game in Independence.

Werth scored 16 points and Vaughan added 13.

Pachess Umbarger led Bland (0-15, 0-6) with 11.
