Police officials gave this account:
The woman told them that she had been walking home from a relative's home but was unfamiliar with the city. The woman had recently moved from California.
She told police she found herself near 11th Street Northwest. As she walked to Orange Avenue, a man offered her $10 to perform oral sex. She refused and continued to walk. The man, along with three other men, grabbed her, police said.
The men knocked her to the ground, kicked her in the stomach and hit her in the face, police said. One of the men took her necklace and $160 from her pants pocket. The men dragged her behind a tree to an open grassy lot. Three of the four men held her down while the fourth man raped her, police said.
The men released the woman and walked away. The woman walked for several hours before a relative found her on Cove Road Northwest. The woman reported the incident to police about 9 p.m. Tuesday. She became ill at the Police Department and was taken to Community Hospital of Roanoke Valley for treatment.
Police continue to investigate.
