BOTETOURT JAIL ESCAPEE CAUGHT

Roanoke police apprehended a Roanoke man Wednesday afternoon more than eight hours after he walked off a work detail at the Botetourt County Jail.

Botetourt County Sheriff Reed Kelly said city police found the escaped prisoner just before 5 - still wearing his jail jumpsuit. He surrendered without incident.

Kelly identified the escapee as 32-year-old Brian Willie Miller. He was serving time in the Botetourt jail for a probation violation.

Miller had been at the jail for a few months, Kelly said, and had only about a month left to serve. He was a trusty responsible for keeping the jail's kitchen clean and emptying the trash.

About 7:30 a.m., Miller took out the trash but did not return, Kelly said. Police believe he took the head cook's car keys from her purse and fled in her car. The car was found undamaged shortly after noon on Shenandoah Avenue.

Kelly said Miller will be charged with felony escape and auto larceny.
