FedEx rejects union mediation

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Federal Express Corp. rejected a mediated settlement with its pilots union over a contract dispute, triggering a 30-day ``cooling-off'' period to begin at midnight.

The company's 2,800 pilots could strike or stage other work actions after the cooling-off period ends. That's when the express delivery company could also lock out pilots from their jobs and hire new pilots or simply impose its own work rules.

The period ends on Nov. 25, the beginning of the peak holiday package-delivery season. Federal Express and its pilots union have been in contract negotiations for more than 17 months, since May 19, 1994.

Federal Express shares fell 2 1/4 to 81 5/8.
