CAVE SPRING RUNS AWAY WITH TITLES

Ben Dowdy won the boys' competition and Lee Ann Agee was the top girls' finisher, leading Cave Spring to the team titles Thursday at the Roanoke Valley District cross country championships in Salem.

Dowdy covered the 3.1-mile course at Roanoke College in 16 minutes, 44 seconds. The Knights had three runners in the boys' top 10.

Agee paced the girls' field with a time of 21:48. Cave Spring had five girls in the top 10.

In other sports in the region:

Roanoke Catholic's Maeve O'Meara won the girls' individual title and the Celtics took home the team title at the Blue Ridge Conference girls' cross country championships at Washington Park in Roanoke.

O'Meara ran the 2.95-mile course in 20:04, with teammates Teresa Monsour and Jenny Race finishing second and third, respectively. Courtney Porter (eighth) and Regina Garza (ninth) gave Roanoke Catholic five runners in the top 10.

Roanoke Valley Christian finished second as Molly Ison, Andrea Dooley and Jessica Johnson took fourth, fifth and sixth, respectively.

Top-ranked Virginia's Mike Fisher and Damian Silvera are among 15 finalists for the Missouri Athletic Club's college soccer player of the year award.

Fisher, a junior forward, entered the week tied for 10th in the nation in scoring (12 goals, 12 assists). Silvera, a senior midfielder, has scored or assisted on six of UVa's past seven goals and has three goals and eight assists for the season.

The winner of the award will be announced Jan.8 in St.Louis.
