NO. 1 GILES FALLS IN W.VA.

James Monroe (W.Va.) knocked off Giles, the No.1-ranked team in Group A, 7-6 in overtime on Friday night.

After regulation ended scoreless, each team received the ball at the 10-yard line with four plays in which to score a touchdown or kick a field goal. Giles (7-1) scored on its possession when Reggie Hoston hit Emmanuel Young with a 12-yard pass, but the Spartans' conversion run failed.

James Monroe (8-1) tied the score on its possession when Lance Burton scored on a 7-yard touchdown run. Adam Jackson's extra-point kick provided the winning point.

Grayson County 27, Fort Chiswell 14: Chad Shaffner ran for two touchdowns and threw for one as the Blue Devils defeated the Pioneers in Independence to clinch the Mountain Empire District title.

Grayson County got on the board first with a 4-yard run by Shaffner. Fort Chiswell retaliated in the second quarter with a 7-yard scoring pass from Gary Arnold to Michael White.

Shaffner put the Blue Devils back on top with a 37-yard pass to Kevin Dalton. But on the ensuing kickoff, White ran 82 yards for a touchdown and the Pioneers took a 14-13 lead into the locker room at halftime.

After Fort Chiswell (4-4 overall, 1-1 district) lost the ball on downs in the third quarter, Grayson County (4-4, 4-0) drove 70 yards and scored on a 1-yard run by Shaffner. The Pioneers put together a drive of their own, but with 1:30 left Grayson County's Brian McDonnell picked off an Arnold pass. With 1:04 remaining, Joey Swaha rambled 42 yards to seal the victory.

Swaha finished with nine carries for 87 yards, and Fort Chiswell's White had nine carries for 46 yards.

Floyd County 20, Narrows 14, OT: It had been a rough season and a rough week for the Buffaloes, with eight starters quitting the team before the game. Floyd County needed a hero. It found three.

Safety Tony Erchull came up with two key turnovers as the Buffaloes defeated the Green Wave in Floyd to record its first victory of the season.

Narrows drove to the Buffaloes' 15-yard line with time running out in the fourth quarter, but Erchull made an interception at the 3 to preserve a tie. When the Green Wave got the first possession in overtime, Erchull recovered a fumble and Nick Wohn ran for a 10-yard, game-winning touchdown on the next play.

Craig Reed scored Floyd County's first two touchdowns on runs of 39 and 19 yards. He finished with 131 yards on 18 carries. Wohn had 139 on 13.

David Turner had 129 yards and a touchdown on 20 carries for Narrows (2-6). Floyd is 1-7.

Bath County 21, Buffalo Gap 14: The Chargers outlasted the Bison in a tightly contested non-district game in Hot Springs.

Bath County (6-2) held Buffalo Gap (3-5) to 28 yards passing, but gave up 209 yards through the air on the arm of Ryan Durham. Mike Bojko was on the receiving end for 185 of those yards.

The Bison couldn't stop Bath County on the ground as the Chargers rolled up 279 yards. Senior Ivan Franklin carried the load, with 22 rushes for 165 yards and two touchdowns.

On its last possession, Buffalo Gap moved from its 3-yard line to its 36 before fumbling to end the game.

Bland County 43, Auburn 8: Chris Beaman and Todd Morehead rushed for two touchdowns and more than 100 yards each as the Bears (6-2) rolled up 403 yards on the ground in a non-district victory over the Eagles (5-4) in Bland.

Beaman finished with 129 yards and scored on runs of 50 and 18 yards for Bland County, which took a 37-0 lead early in the fourth quarter. Morehead had 106 yards and scored on runs of 5 and 4 yards.

The Bears also got scoring runs from J.B. Lambert and John Newberry.

William Shelton scored the lone touchdown for Auburn, on a 57-yard fourth-quarter run.

George Wythe 18, John Battle 14: The Maroons scored the game's final 12 points to pull out a Hogoheegee District victory in Bristol.

Wythe (3-5, 3-3) drove 53 yards on its final possession, capped by a 7-yard touchdown run by senior Jason Smith.

Senior Kyle Harrison rushed for 224 yards on 32 carries for John Battle (2-6, 2-5).

Graham 41, Carroll County 0: Milton Byard scored four touchdowns as the G-Men routed the Cavaliers in a non-district game in Hillsville.

Byard scored on runs of 48, 58 and 52 yards and returned an interception 53 yards for a score.

Tony Easley scored on a 42-yard run as Graham (7-2) amassed 34 points in the first half. Josh Burton had a 1-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter.

Rural Retreat 14, Northwood 6: The Indians held the Panthers to 78 yards of total offense in a Hogoheegee District victory in Saltville.

Rural Retreat (6-2, 5-1) was led in rushing by Ronnie Six with 89 yards and C.J. Patton with 80. The Indians finished with 218 yards of total offense.

The lone bright spot for Northwood (0-7, 0-5) was a 48-yard scoring run by Travis Chapman. The Panthers fumbled the football nine times and lost two.

Bassett 22, Tunstall 6: T.J. Johnson threw for one touchdown and ran for one, and Carl Watkins rushed for 136 yards as the Bengals beat the Trojans in a Piedmont District game in Bassett.

Jackson staked the Bengals (4-4, 4-3) to a 15-0 lead by hitting Jervis Wimbush with a 27-yard scoring pass in the first quarter and by running 13 yards for a touchdown in the second.

Tunstall cut it to 15-6 on Dion Strange's 65-yard scoring run in the third quarter, but Watkins put away the game with a 4-yard touchdown run in the fourth period.
