MINUTEMEN GET IN LINE FOR PLAYOFFS

Liberty's defense and special teams stepped out of the shadow of the Minutemen's offense Friday night as they knocked off Amherst County 8-7 in a Seminole District game in Amherst.

With defense keeping it close, Liberty, the eighth-ranked team in the Group AA poll, scored a late touchdown and turned a botched conversion kick into two points to beat No.6 Amherst County (6-2 overall, 6-2 district).

The Minutemen (7-1, 7-1) matched the school record for victories with two games to play and would appear to be in good position to challenge for a Division 4 Region III playoff berth.

Amherst County, not much of a passing team to date, took a 7-0 lead with 10:45 left in the third quarter when quarterback Mitch White tossed a perfect pass into the outstretched arms of halfback Maurice Clark, who was 9 yards beyond the defense. Clark covered 63 yards on the play, and White came through with the conversion kick.

``We knew they'd make big plays; they're the No. 6 team in the state,'' Liberty end Gregg Reynolds said. ``But we were confident that we'd make some big plays, too.''

That didn't happen until early in the fourth quarter after the Liberty defense, terrific almost all night, forced a punt from the Lancers' 28. With White back to kick, Ryan Stevens of Liberty streaked through to block it. Teammate Rick Wright then recovered at the 1.

Two snaps later, Stevens, playing I-formation fullback, burrowed his way over for the score. Liberty lined up a kick to tie, but holder J.J. Coles, the quarterback, lost control of the ball on the wet turf. Coles recovered to hit Wright for the two-point conversion.

Glenvar 42, Craig County 8: The Highlanders built a 35-point halftime lead and cruised to a Pioneer District victory over the Rockets at Glenvar.

The Highlanders (3-5, 1-3) dominated the game, thanks in part to six Craig County turnovers. The Rockets (0-8, 0-5) gained 159 yards of total offense, 63 passing and 96 rushing. However, 121 of those yards came on two plays, a 55-yard reception and a 66-yard run.

Eric East led Glenvar with two touchdowns, one on a 3-yard run and one on a 65-yard punt return. Troy Henderson intercepted a pass and returned it 42 yards for the Highlanders.

Randolph-Macon Academy 47, North Cross 0: Nigel Hamilton rushed for 290 yards and five touchdowns as the hosts overran the Raiders in Front Royal.

Randolph-Macon improved its record to 3-5; North Cross is 2-6.
