Chris Chladek put the Hokies (8-8-2 overall, 6-3-2 Atlantic 10) on the board in the 28th minute of the first half off an assist from Adam Johnson. The Dukes (3-12-2, 2-6-2) threatened offensively throughout the second half, but with 47 seconds left, Matt Whalen scored off another assist by Johnson to seal the victory.
Tech ended with a 7-0-0 home record, the Hokies' first perfect home season.

Roanoke scored three goals in the final five minutes of the first half to break open a scoreless game and beat Washington and Lee 4-0 in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference women's soccer tournament semifinal at Ashland.
Courtney Gross gave the Maroons a 1-0 lead with 4:12 left in the first half and Tori Erickson scored twice in the final 2:30 to give Roanoke (14-5) a 3-0 halftime advantage.
The Maroons will play Randolph-Macon (18-0-1) in the championship game today. Eighth-ranked Randolph-Macon defeated Virginia Wesleyan 3-0 in the other semifinal game.
Michael Carey scored the lone goal and Emerson Umana assisted as the Ferrum men's soccer team defeated Chowan (1-13) 1-0 at Ferrum (7-7-1).
Susan Sautter had a goal and an assist as the Ferrum women's soccer team downed Chowan 3-0 at Ferrum. Megan Turner and Erin Timothy each added goals for Ferrum (12-4-1). Chowan is 3-12.
Liberty University's Jared Albert shot an even-par 71 to lead the Flames to the team championship at the VMI Invitational at the Lexington Golf and Country Club. Albert had a two-day total of 150 to edge teammate Andy Braddock by five shots.
Liberty finished at 620, followed by American at 638, Radford at 640, Washington and Lee at 645 and VMI Red at 646.
Holly Osmond knocked in a penalty stroke five minutes into the second half to propel Radford (9-9) past Richmond 2-1 in a field hockey match in Radford.
In Charlottesville, Roanoke Valley Christian Academy's John Childress finished first in 17:55 to lead his team to the Virginia Independent Conference State Championship in cross country.
RVCA finished with a team score of 39, followed by North Cross' 72. Roanoke Catholic was fourth out of eight teams.
