FROSTBURG ST. FOILS FERRUM ON GROUND

Ferrum College's slim postseason hopes took a major blow Saturday as the Panthers fell to Frostburg State 21-6 in an NCAA Division III football game.

The Bobcats (5-3) were winless in their previous four meetings with the Panthers (6-3).

Frostburg lost three fumbles in the first quarter, but Ferrum failed to capitalize. The Panthers also were charitable, losing one fumble and throwing three interceptions.

Quarterback Dominic Novak paced a punishing Bobcats ground attack. Novak scored on runs of 50 and 24 yards and gained 110 yards on 14 carries. Frostburg had 305 yards rushing.

The Bobcats took a 21-0 lead in the fourth quarter on Shawn Freeman's 3-yard run. It came two plays after Brandon Reece picked off a pass by Millard Vining and returned it 55 yards to the Ferrum 10. A penalty gave Frostburg a first-and-goal at the 5.

The Panthers' touchdown came with 2:12 left in the game when sophomore offensive lineman Earl Davis pounced on a fumble in the end zone.

While Ferrum lost, Panthers receiver John Poindexter set the school record for receptions in a season. Poindexter, who had nine catches for 118 yards, has 45 receptions this season, breaking the record of 42 set by Mark Wells in 1986.

Ferrum saw its five-game winning streak come to an end.
