It was closer than it looked and closer than the Generals would have liked.
``It's never easy for us," coach Frank Miriello said. ``We're happy with the victory, but we're not satisfied with the performance."
The Eagles' first possession began on W&L's two-yard line after Hunter Jones blocked Drew Thomas' punt attempt. Bridgewater (0-8, 0-4 ODAC) got on the board on their second offensive play with Chris Bryant's one-yard touchdown run.
Down 7-0, the Generals (4-2-1, 2-2 ODAC) musterd a 28-yard field goal before Bridgewater's Aaron Ball fumbled away the ball and the lead.
W&L defensive end Rich Achee recovered on the Eagles' 10-yard line.
With 6:45 left in the second quarter, quarterback Brooks Fischer ran a naked bootleg right 2 yards for a 10-7 Generals lead.
A 52-yard drive in the final two and a half minutes of the first half gave W&L a 17-7 lead at the break. Prior to Saturday, the Generals had been outscored 49-7 in the second quarter this season.
Bridgewater got within four, 17-13, with 11:05 remaining in the game, but Chas Chastain's 11-yard touchdown run on a reverse sealed the game with 1:33 to go. It was the freshman receiver's fifth straight game with a touchdown.
``It got scary there for a minute," Miriello said.
The longest play from scrimmage for either team went just 16 yards. The Generals' final and time-consuming drive was marred by two Eagle pass interference penalties. Bridgewater totaled 108 yards of penalties.
W&L tailback J.P. Josephson ran for a career-high 97 yards on 31 carries and scored. Bridgewater's Frank Richardson led all rushers with 109 yards on 19 attempts.
Fischer completed 10 of 23 passes for 72 yards. The Generals had 261 total yards from scrimmage.
With the victory, W&L clinched consecutive .500 seasons for the first time since 1989-90.
