COLLINS, Richard Preston, Jr., of Roanoke, 1944-1995, passed from this life on Saturday, October 28, 1995, at his sister's home. His twenty years of service with the Department of Defense allowed him great success and happiness as a teacher of Music and Drama in Japan, Korea, and more extensively, in Germany. Richard was preceded in death by his father, Richard Preston Collins, Sr., and his mother, Edna Blevins Collins. He is survived by one brother, the Rev. Danny W. Collins and sister-in-law, Pat, of Radford, and two sisters, Mrs. Betty June Addington and brother-in-law, the Rev. Charles, of Bluefield, and Mrs. Joann Logan of Roanoke. Also surviving are two aunts, Mrs. Christene Linkous of Christiansburg and Mrs. Chessie Willis of Lansing, N.C., and one uncle, Dr. Carl Collins of Daleville. He leaves four nieces, four nephews, many cousins, great-nieces and great-nephews. All who ever met or knew our dear ``Dickie"" have rightly declared his epitaph, ``To know him is to love him!"" He will be greatly missed by his family and friends the world over. HELMS, Lockie Jones, 84, of Marion, died Sunday, October 29, 1995, in Smyth County Community Hospital. She was an active member of the First United Methodist Church, served as Treasurer of the Smyth County Mental Health Association for six years and served as a Pink Lady at Smyth County Community Hospital for eight years. She is survived by one sister, Edythe Jones Gwyn of Marion; two nephews, Clayborne Gwyn and Hugh Gwyn of Marion, and several great-nieces and great-nephews. HENDERSON, Virginia Leffel, 87, of Troutville, died Sunday, October 29, 1995. She was preceded in death by 34 days by her husband, Ashby H. Henderson. A graduate of Radford University, Mrs. Henderson retired in 1969, having taught for 39 years in the Craig and Botetourt County School Systems. She was a member of St. Mark's United Methodist Church, where she was a member of the Official Board, Communion Steward, and Delegate to the Annual Virginia United Methodist Church Conference. Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Jerry W. and Donna H. Henderson; grandson and spouse, Jeffery W. and Karen E. Henderson; a granddaughter, Ashley L. Henderson all of Troutville; foster sister, Margaret Josephine Woods Dudding, Salem; and a lifelong friend, Norine Ro ss Lugar, New Castle. MACHERAS, Theodore James, (``Ted""), 71, of Lexington, died Saturday, October 28, 1995, at his home. Mr. Macheras was born March 15, 1924, in Ohio, a son of the late James Macheras and loving mother for whom Ted cared for many years, Demetra Vahlas Macheras, who passed from this life August 26, 1995. He was a member of the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church in Roanoke, a member of the Lexington Moose Lodge, a veteran of World War II, and a member of the V.F.W. Post #1499. Surviving are one brother, John Macheras, Cocoa, Fla.; three nephews, and three nieces. SHAFFER, Jessie Murray, 91, of Wytheville, died Saturday, October 28, 1995 at her home after a lengthy illness. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Frank L. Shaffer; her mother; and seven brothers and sisters. She was a school teacher in Roane and Jackson Counties, West Va., where she was one of the last teachers to ride horseback to her teaching assignments. She married a Methodist Minister and served with him for 45 years as a pioneer in Christian Education, Women's Issues, and Religious Drama. A resident of Wytheville for the past 28 years, she was a member of St. Paul United Methodist Church, Wilderness Road Chapter of the DAR, Blue Ridge Chapter of the Daughters of Founders and Patriots of America, and the Moribana Garden Club, which organization she named. She also was active in the Annual Chautauqua Festival of Wytheville, serving as its first Historian and being named in 1993 as its Grand Marshal. In 1990, she was Historian of the Bicentennial of Wythe County. Mrs. Shaffer is survived by her children, Mrs. John Roger (Patricia) Thompson, Wytheville, Dr. Frank L. Shaffer Jr., Charleston, W. Va.; three grandchildren, Jennifer Shaffer, Morgantown, W.Va., Mrs. Matthew McConnell, Columbus, Ohio, and Charles A. Shaffer, Morgantown, W.Va.; four great-granddaughters, Caitlin, Mary Wesley, and Grace McConnell and Siobhan Shaffer; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday, October 31, 1995, at the St. Paul United Methodist Church with the Rev. Dr. Charles C. Burnett officiating.
