PETTY OFFICER 1ST CLASS ROBERT N. WILLIS, son of Ruth Willis of Salem and Bernard Willis, recently returned from a six-month deployment to the eastern Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea aboard the USS Valley Forge to support the United States' war against drugs. Willis is stationed in San Diego, Calif.

DALE M. SMITH JR., son of Dale M. and Annie F. Smith of Salem, recently completed military leadership training at an Army ROTC advanced camp at Fort Bragg in Fayetteville, N.C. He is a 1985 graduate of Salem High School and attends Christopher Newport University.

PHILIP S. TOWNSEND, son of Philip A. and Sandy Townsend of Roanoke, has been commissioned as a second lieutenant after completing an Army ROTC advanced camp at Fort Bragg in Fayetteville, N.C. Townsend is a 1990 graduate of Northside High School and a 1995 graduate of Virginia Military Institute.

AIRMAN MICHELLE A. GREENE, graduated from basic training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas.

Greene is the daughter of Johnny H. and Antoinette W. Greene of Roanoke and a 1994 graduate of Northside High School.

CHIEF PETTY OFFICER WAYNE G. MIESEN of Roanoke recently took part in the commissioning ceremony for Coast Guard Port Security Unit 305 in Portsmouth. Miesen is a 1975 graduate of Roanoke College and has been a Roanoke police officer for 20 years.

CPL. WILLIAM H. PARR, son of Duane and Nancy Parr of Roanoke, recently received a promotion to his present rank while serving with the 8th Communications Battalion, II Marine Expeditionary Force at Camp Lejeune, N.C. Parr, a 1993 graduate of Northside High School, joined the Marine Corps in July 1993.

PETTY OFFICER 3RD CLASS CHRISTIAN E. BURNETT, LANCE CPL. JASON T. FRIDLEY,PETTY OFFICER 3RD CLASS STERLING E. MOTLEY, PETTY OFFICER 3RD CLASS REGINALD L. PRICE, all of Roanoke, and newly promoted FIREMAN RECRUIT BRANT G. TURNER of Salem recently returned from a six-month deployment aboard the USS Theodore Roosevelt, which recently participated in the NATO air strikes in Bosnia.

Burnett is the son of Keith and Lou Burnett. Fridley, a 1992 graduate of Cave Spring High School, is the son of Jan Austin of Roanoke and William Fridley of Eagle Rock. Motley, a 1991 graduate of Patrick Henry High School, is the son of Dianne Forrest. Price, a 1986 graduate of William Fleming High School, is the son of Ralph Price and Shirley Barbour. Turner, a 1994 graduate of Salem High School, is the son of Glenn and Twila Turner.

ARMY PVT. JASON S. SOBATAKA, son of Jeffrey and Mae Sobataka of Salem, recently completed basic training at Fort Jackson in Columbia, S.C. He is a 1995 graduate of Glenvar High School.

MARVIN LOYD JR., son of Marvin and Evelyn Loyd, has been promoted to corporal in the Marines and has been assigned to 29 Palms, Calif.

ROBERT E. FUDGE, of Charlotte, N.C., and formerly of Roanoke, has been elected national vice president of the Fleet Reserve Associations.

Fudge entered the Navy in 1944 and retired as a chief journalist in 1968. He has served as associate editor of the Navy Times, director of press and public relations for Seagram Distillers in London, and in the hotel business, primarily with American Motor Inns in Roanoke.

He is a former regional president of the association, which is made up of career and enlisted members of the Navy, Marines and Coast Guard.
