CRAIG COUNTY VOTERS HAVE A BUSY BALLOT

Nearly half of the elected positions in Craig County will be contested in Tuesday's elections. School Board members will be elected for the first time. Voters also will elect three members of the Craig County Board of Supervisors and a commissioner of revenue. Three other constitutional officers are unopposed.

Supervisors Chairman Zane M. Jones, a 10-term member of the board, is the only supervisor facing opposition. W.W. Miles is contesting Jones' long hold on the Simmonsville District seat to the board. Miles, a retiree, narrowly failed to unseat Jones, a farmer, in 1991.

Karen H. Southworth, a member of the School Board and an office manager, is unopposed for the New Castle seat on the Board of Supervisors. Incumbent Donald L. Caldwell did not file to have his name placed on the ballot.

Incumbent John M. Lee, an employee of Norfolk Southern, is facing no opposition for the Alleghany District seat on the Board of Supervisors.

Commissioner of the Revenue Rebecca Price is facing a challenge from Mary D. Hunter of New Castle. Price is the only one of four constitutional officers on the ballot this year to face opposition.

Unopposed incumbent constitutional officers are Billy B. McPherson, sheriff; Sandra C. Reynolds, treasurer; and Thaddeus Robert Cox, commonwealth's attorney.

School Board incumbents Thomas A. Zimmermann of the New Castle District and James Cady of the Alleghany District are facing no opposition.

School Board member Helen Abbott Looney did not seek election to the board, while incumbent Bonnie Hutchison, a housewife, is facing a challenge from Rodney Williams in the Simmonsville District. Williams, chief forest warden for the county, has a daughter attending county schools

Four candidates are vying for two at-large seats on the board, as well. The two top vote-getters in the four-way race will win the at-large seats. The at-large school board candidates are:

Brenda Allen, a housewife in the Sinking Creek area, whose children have graduated from the county schools.

Hettie J. Farley, an insurance agent and former educator. She has a son in the county's elementary school.

Robert Knepp, an employee of the Craig-Botetourt Electric Cooperative. Although he's unmarried and has no children, he says he is concerned about the county's future.

Patrick A. Myers, an employee of Appalachian Power Co., who has a daughter in the county's high school.
