NASDAQ, SEC START TALKS

The Securities and Exchange Commission and the parent of the Nasdaq Stock Market have begun preliminary talks aimed at settling a year-long investigation of the market, a report said Wednesday.

Dow Jones News Service, citing unnamed Wall Street sources, reported the settlement discussions involve the National Association of Securities Dealers Inc.'s changing its rules to clean up Nasdaq, the nation's second largest stock market.

A top NASD official, reached by The Associated Press, declined to comment Wednesday on the report.

``We talk to the commission all of the time, but I wouldn't expect anything to happen this week,'' said Richard G. Ketchum, the NASD's executive vice president.
