MAN KILLED IN SHOOTOUT WITH POLICE

A crack-smoking fugitive sought for two convenience store robberies and the abduction of a store clerk shot and wounded a police officer Wednesday before the officer killed him, police said.

Bradley Todd McCombie, 31, of Lynchburg, died in a gunfight with Henrico County Officer Andrew Michael Margiotta after the officer spotted him driving the clerk's car and chased him. The clerk, Michael Brett Dorsey, had alerted police after McCombie released him unharmed about 30 minutes before the gunfight.

Three .357-caliber rounds hit Margiotta, one in the arm, another in the abdomen and a third in his bulletproof vest, said Henrico Police Chief Henry W. Stanley Jr.

Margiotta, 32, was in stable condition after surgery at the Medical College of Virginia Hospitals and was expected to recover fully, Stanley said.

It was not immediately known how many shots hit McCombie.

The revolver was found under his body.

McCombie had been convicted of several felonies and was on probation, Lynchburg police Cmdr. Eugene Wingfield said Wednesday. He declined to specify the crimes but said, "There was nothing as serious as what he did last night."
