BLACKSBURG CLINCHES NEW RIVER DISTRICT TITLE

Blacksburg capitalized on poor shooting by Carroll County to notch a 44-30 girls' basketball victory Thursday night in Hillsville.

The victory clinched the New River District title for the Indians (8-13 overall, 3-1 district).

Carroll County (14-7, 2-2) made only 12 of 57 shots from the field (21 percent).

April Rogers was the lone double digit scorer for the Indians, notching 17 points.

Angie Farmer led Carroll County with 10 points.

Blacksburg qualified for the Region IV tournament with its victory and earned the home-court advantage for the New River District tournament.

Grayson County 62, Narrows 56: Lindsey Carico scored four of her 19 points in overtime as Grayson County upset the Green Wave in a Mountain Empire District game at Narrows.

If Narrows had won, the Green Wave would have tied Galax for first place in the district and forced a playoff. Galax beat Rocky Gap 61-44.

The game was nip and tuck throughout. The teams were tied at 41-41 near the end of regulation when Grayson County's Sally Werth missed two free throws with no time left to send the game into overtime.

The Blue Devils took over in overtime with Carico and Mickey Young combining for seven of the team's 11 points. Young had 12 for the game and Werth added 11.

Suzanne Webb had 16 points for Narrows, Becky Turner and Melissa Lawrence scored 12 and Melissa Lucas chipped in 10.

Radford 53, Auburn 43: In Radford, the Bobcats fell down early, but got up behind their only senior, Crystal Hubbard, and defeated Auburn in the Three Rivers District, solidifying second place as the season draws to a close.

Auburn (10-10, 3-5) lept out to a 13-4 lead, but Radford closed the opening period with a 12-2 run to take the lead. The Bobcats then held the tired Eagles to only a field goal in the second quarter, extending the lead to 14 points and sealing the win for Radford.

Auburn coming off a loss to Shawsville the previous night saw its chances of claiming the second spot in the district fade rapidly. The loss to Radford put the Eagles in the same bracket as district champion Floyd County.

Hubbard, celebrated Senior Night with a career-high 22 points, on an 11-of-17 performance from the floor. She also grabbed six rebounds and dished out four assists.

Charlee Taylor chipped in with 16 points and Jenny Greco added a dozen to aid Radford (14-6, 6-2) in the win.

Crystal Moles, the Three Rivers District scoring leader tallied 18 points and grabbed 17 rebounds in the losing effort.

Liberty 72, Appomattox 36: The Minettes clinched second place in the Seminole District with a victory in Bedford.

Liberty (16-4) was led by Sue Cowlbeck, who had 21 points and 15 rebounds in the victory. Kellea Whorley added 15 points, and Felicia Miller added 13 points and 11 rebounds.

Galax 61, Rocky Gap 44: The Eagles jumped out early in the first, and held on to keep the Mountain Empire District game tied with Galax at the half, but the Maroon Tide showed why they are the fourth best team in Timesland, outscoring Rocky Gap by 17 in the second half for the win.

Tammy Cox led Galax in the second half, scoring 22 of her game-high 28 points in the half. Thirteen of her second-half points were recorded in the third period, in which the Eagles (19-1, 9-1) built an eight point lead.

Erin Kyle aided Cox, accounting for 11 points and Tiffany Williams added nine in the victory.

Rocky Gap (2-18, 2-8) was led by Amanda Clark's 15 point performance and Liwana Deatley also grabbed 11 rebounds in the losing effort.

Floyd County 78, Shawsville 42: In Shawsville, Floyd County jumped out to an early 29-5 first quarter lead and drained nine 3-pointers as the Buffaloes showed why they are Three Rivers District champions yet again.

The Buffalo press created 30 Shawnee turnovers, which led to easy Floyd County buckets.

Melissa Cantrell led the offensive barrage, coming back from an ankle injury to record a game-high 18 points. She was the leading deep threat for Floyd (16-5, 8-0), connecting on four shots from behind the arch.

Sara Conner went for 15 points and Julie Sowers added nine in the Buffalo win.

The Shawnees (11-9, 3-5) were led by the district's third leading scorer, Sarah Hagood, with 18 points and 15 rebounds. Megan Forster also recorded a double-double, going for 16 points and 10 boards.

Fort Chiswell 65, Bland 33: At Fort Chiswell, Bland remained winless as the Pioneers won going away in the Mountain Empire District.

Amber Gunter paced Fort Chiswell (7-12, 6-4) with 14 points. Amy Coleman added 12 and Kristen Harmon had 10.

Bland fell to 0-20, 0-10.

Martinsville 60, Chatham 30: The Bulldogs bolted to an early lead and never looked back as they defeated Chatham in a Piedmont District matchup.

Martinsville (17-4, 15-3) clinched a tie for the district title with the win. The Bulldogs will play Fieldale-Collinsville on Saturday night at Magna Vista High School to decide the regular-season title.

Martinsville honored junior Erica Brandon before the game for being the third lady Bulldog to surpass the 1,000 point mark in her career. Brandon followed up the pre-game ceremonies with a 19 point performance. Teammate Trecita Holland, who surpassed the 1,000 point mark two weeks ago, added 13 points, nine rebounds and five assists. Sophomore Tiffany Watkins scored 12 points and nine rebounds. Chatham (3-16 overall, 2-16 district) was led by Claudia White who scored 12 points.

William Byrd 60, Alleghany 44: Kristi Dyer scored 19 points and the Terriers dominated the boards to defeat the Mountaineers in a key Blue Ridge District game in Vinton.

With the victory, Byrd tied Salem for the regular-season title and forced a playoff Monday night at Lord Botetourt for the top seeding in the Blue Ridge tournament.

Cathy Smith added 10 points and 10 rebounds for William Byrd (19-2 overall, 8-2 district), which had a 38-20 advantage on the boards. Kim Kendrick had seven assists directing the Terriers' offense.

Natasha Chapman, Katie Craft and Tracy Cummings scored 12 points each to lead Alleghany.

Staunton River 47, Brookville 39: At Moneta, the Golden Eagles stunned the district champion Bees with a big first quarter and held on for the Seminole District victory.

Staunton River (14-6, 14-6) outscored Brookville (18-2, 18-2) 18-7 in the first quarter and hung on to win thanks to a patient attack.

Erin Wolfe paced the Golden Eagles with 15 points, six assists, six rebounds and four steals. Penny Forrest added 11 for Staunton River.

Megan Morris led Brookville, the top seed in next week's district tournament, with 14 points.

Chilhowie 66, Rural Retreat 61: Kristie Poe poured in 28 points as Chilhowie won a Hogoheegee District game in Rural Retreat.

Poe had 12 points in the fourth quarter and the Warriors (9-11, 9-7) made 14 of 18 free throws down the stretch to hold off a Rural Retreat comeback.

Nicole Hedrick had 18 points for Rural Retreat (13-6, 10-6).

Christiansburg 51, Giles 34: Lisa Dalton scored 20 points as the Blue Demons whipped the Spartans in a non-district contest.

Giles (7-13) made more two-point field goals than Christiansburg (13 to 12), but the Blue Demons won the game at the free-throw line. The Demons made 24 of 30 free-throw attempts, and Giles made only 8 of 22. Dalton was 8-of-8 at the line.
