BROWN, Era Shackelford, 97, of Our Lady of the Valley, Roanoke, passed away Thursday, November 2, 1995. She was the widow of Charles C. Brown Sr. and was a member of the First Baptist Church of Roanoke for over 60 years. Mrs. Brown was an employee of the Virginia Galleries until her retirement. Surviving are a son and daughter-in-law, Charles C. Jr. and Fraher H. Brown, Charlotte, N.C.; a niece, Florence S. Shimp, Magnolia, N.J.; a cousin, Angie Wood, Roanoke. Funeral services will be at Oakey's Roanoke Chapel at noon Saturday, with the Rev. John D. Cochran officiating. Interment will be in Evergreen Burial Park. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church Building Fund, 515 Third St., S.W., Roanoke, Va. 24016. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Friday at Oakey's Roanoke Chapel.

CHAFFIN, Clara Wilkinson, 96, of Richfield Nursing Center, Salem and formerly of Danville, Va., died Wednesday, November 1, 1995. She was the widow of Oakie C. Chaffin. Mrs. Chaffin was a long time member of the Keen Street Baptist Church in Danville and currently a member of Windsor Hills United Methodist Church in Roanoke. Surviving are a son and daughter-in-law, Ira W. and Lois F. Chaffin of Salem; grandson and wife, Ira W. ``Bill"" and Kristina Chaffin of Richmond; 2 great-grandsons, Adam and Cory Chaffin of Richmond; nieces, Mrs. Frances Weatherford of Danville and Mrs. Myra Williams, Virginia Beach; sister-in-law, Mrs. Nelle Wilkinson, Richmond. Funeral services will be held at Oakey's South Chapel 10 a.m. Saturday with the Rev. D. Michael Meloy and the Rev. Bryan D. Oldham officiating. Graveside services will be held in Highland Burial Park, Danville, Va. at 1 p.m. Saturday. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be made to Windsor Hills United Methodist Church. CLOWERS, Samuel David, 45, of Dryfork, Va., died early Wednesday, November 1, 1995. The funeral will be 1 p.m. Friday from the Richardson-Horne Funeral Home Chapel in Christiansburg, conducted by the Rev. Richard H. Horne with burial in Sunset Cemetery, Christiansburg. EPPS, Joseph Oliver, 90, of Roanoke, passed away Monday, October 30, 1995. Survivors include one son, John E. FLAGG, Homer Herald, 83, of Salem, died Wednesday, November 1, 1995. He was a retired engineering draftsman, a graduate of the School of Organic Education, and had belonged to the Civilian Conservation Corps. Mr. Flagg was the widower of Inez Gibbs Flagg. Survivors include his son and daughter-in-law, George F. and Carolyn A. Flagg, Bedford; daughters, Cherry E. Richardson, and Bonnie D. Flagg, both of Salem; sister, Doris M. Parr, Erlanger, Kentucky; sister-in-law, Arden C. Flagg, Fairhope, Ala.; brother-in-law, J. Carroll Gibbs and his wife, Gladys, Fitzgerald, Ga.; eight grandchildren; and eleven great-grandchildren. HENDERSON, Emma Jennette, 85, of Blacksburg, died Wednesday, November 1, 1995 at Montgomery Regional Hospital. She was born February 17, 1910 in Simpkinsville, S.C. Surviving are her husband, Julian E. ""Dude"" Henderson, Blacksburg; several nieces and nephews. JOHNSTON, Lucille M., 77, of Rt. 7, Rocky Mount, died Wednesday, November 1, 1995. She is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Barbara Finney, Upper Marlboro, Md.; one son, Howard T. Johnston, Rocky Mount; four granddaughters, Ms. Kalisha Finney, Upper Marlboro, Md., Ms. Tunya Johnston, Ms. Takeko Johnston, Ms. Torrea Johnston, all of Rocky Mount; one grandson, Taron Johnston, Rocky Mount; three sisters, Mrs. Marion Pitts, Mrs. Maragaret Wainwright, and Mrs. Gillie Little, all of Rocky Mount; one special niece, Mrs. Renee Mattocks, Rocky Mount; nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends. JORDAN, Dominick T., 86, of Vinton, died Wednesday, November 1, 1995. Born February 25, 1909, in Paterson, N.J., Mr. Jordan was a resident and civic leader of Fair Lawn, N.J., for 58 years. Mr. Jordan retired from Public Service Electric and Gas Company after 44 years of service. He served as a volunteer fireman with Company #1 and was the founder of The Fair Lawn Shade Tree Commission. He was a past president and Paul Harris fellow of the Fair Lawn Rotary Club. He served as president of the Fair Lawn Board of Education for two terms and was also a past president of the Fair Lawn Cosmos Club. His memberships included The Fair Lawn Industrial Park Committee, Fair Lawn Juvenile Council, St. Anne's Catholic Church, The Fair Lawn Planning & Development Committee, The Urban Development League, Boys Scouts of America Troop #147, and The Fair Lawn Public Library Founders. He was a member and former chairman of the Bergen County Red Cross. Surviving are his son and daughter-in -law, Thomas and Patricia Jordan, Troutville; ten grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; former daughter-in-law, Anne J. Miller, Ramsey, N.J. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to Church of the Transfiguration, 3650 Roanoke Road, Fincastle, Va. 24090. Funeral mass will be conducted 11 a.m. Friday at Church of the Transfiguration by the Rev. Stephen R. Rule. The remains will be transferred to Fair Lawn, N.J. for interment. NEWTON, Evelyn Layne Dogan, 86, of Sweetwater, Texas, formerly of Daleville, passed away Monday, October 30, 1995. She was preceded in death by her husbands, Aubrey Dogan and J. M. Newton; sisters, Elva Viar, Christine Abbott; brother, Russel Layne; grandson, Buddy Dogan; step-daughter, Rennie Turnbull. She was a member of Daleville Church of the Brethren, and was active in the Women's Circle, the n ursery, Sunday School teacher, and was also a member of the choir. She also served as a Counselor at Camp Bethel. Her other interests included raising flowers, reading and writing poetry. She is survived by daughter and son-in-law, Arleen and Bill Kennedy; son and daughter-in-law, Vernon and Peggy Dogan; nephews and their wives, Alvin and Jackie Hudson, Norman and Betty Hudson and Durwood Layne; niece, Louise Graham; sister-in-law, Dollie Layne; grandchildren, Karen Mast, Terry Blankenship, Roy Blankenship, Lou Ann Cumbie, Mike Dogan, Kelly Dogan, Christy Bohannon; eleven great-grandchildren; stepchildren, Aundria Wilson, Gene and wife, Catherine Newton, Phil and wife, Elaine Newton, Pamela Newton and husband, Jerry Brashear; step-son-in-law, James Turnbull and wife Nita; eleven step-grandchildren; eight stepgreat-grandchildren. PENNINGTON, Donald H., 63, of Marion, died Wednesday, November 1, 1995 in Smyth County Community Hospital. He is survived by his wife, Ruth W. Pennington, Marion; one daughter, Rachelle L. Pennington, Marion; one son, Karl E. Pennington, Bland; three stepdaughters, Gladys Mhire, Grace Landry, Edna Arsement, all of Lafayette, La.; two stepsons, James Berzas, Mike Berzas, both of Lafayette, La.; two sisters, Gaye Doss, Ida Testerman, both of Marion; four brothers, Ralph Pennington, Boone, N.C., Dave Pennington, Victoria, Kelly Pennington, Marion, Al Pennington, Chilhowie; twelve grandchildren; one great-grandchild; several nieces and nephews. SHEFFLER, Vera Luella Hoewing, 91, of Roanoke, and formerly of Loraine, Ill., passed away Thursday afternoon, November 2, 1995. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ezra ``Jerry"" Sheffler (also of Loraine, Ill., who died in 1972); and her son, Robert Willard Sheffler (of Roanoke, who died in 1994). Surviving are her daughter-in-law, Rahno Ellen Sheffler, Roanoke; three grandchildren and their spouses, Alisa and Philip Horn, Johnston, Iowa, Brent and Valerie Sheffler, Williamsburg, John and Becca Sheffler, Falls Church; two great-grandsons, Daniel and David Sheffler, Falls Church; and a brother, Lester Dee Sheffler, Modesto, Calif. TURNER, Fred Mercer, 83, retired businessman of Reisterstown, Md., formerly of Roanoke, died Wednesday, November 1, 1995, at Cherrywood Healthcare Centre, Reisterstown, Md. He was the son of the late Harry Bernard and Ganelle White Turner. Mr. Turner had Turner Engineering and Mercer Coal Company, with the engineering business being started by his father. Offices were in both West Virginia, with several in Virginia. During World War II Mr. Turner served his country in the development of weapons at Hercules Powder Plant in Radford, Virginia. His surveying and engineering career spanned over 50 years, with work performed in the Baltimore-Washington area and most of the Eastern Seaboard. Born in Glen Jean, West Virginia, Mr. Turner spent most of his life residing in Southern Virginia. He had many friends, due to his willingness to always lend a helping hand, a kind word and share his great zest for life. His warm words of knowledge will be missed by those whose lives he touched. Mr. Turner came to live in the Baltimore area in 1992. There he is survived by his daughter, Ms. Mary Ganelle Turner-Flohr; his grandchildren, Katrina Fromer, James Fromer and Paul Flohr Jr.; and his great-granddaughter, Allison Fromer. Other survivors include his son, Fred Marshall Turner; and granddaughter, Melissa Lee Turner of Bristol, Tennessee; grandson, Fred Marshall Turner II; and great-grandchildren, Dorothy Alexander and Fred Marshall Turner III of Naperville, Illinois. His surviving sisters are Mrs. Maxine Gilmer and Mrs. Mary Sergent of Brookneal, Virginia and Mrs. Patricia Harris of Halifax, Virginia. He was preceded in death by his wife of 49 years, Frances L. Turner and by Antionette Turner. The family will receive friends at Eline Funeral Home in Reisterstown, Md. Friday from 7 to 9 p.m. Services will be sunday at 1 p.m. at Oakview Presbyterian Church, with interment in the White Family Cemetery in Charlotte Court House, Va. Donations may be made to the Boy's Latin School of Maryland Scholarship Fund, 822 West Lake Avenue, Baltimore, Md., where Mr. Turner was Grandparent of the Year in 1994.

WADE, Loraine J. Kidd, 52, of Salem, passed away Tuesday, October 31, 1995. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ray Wade. Surviving are her sons, Larry R. Wade, Roanoke; Sam E. Wade, Haskell, Texas, Donald R. Wade, Buena Vista, Texas; six grandchildren; mother and stepfather, Nell and Jack Minter, Roanoke; brothers, Larry Kidd, Roanoke; Mark Minter, Vinton; Marshall Minter, Roanoke; a number of nieces and nephews. WALTERS, Lucy Winifred Kincer, 76, of Old Stage Road, Wytheville, died Wednesday, November 1, 1995 in the Wythe County Community Hospital. She was preceded in death by her mother, Clara Kincer; son, Jerry Walters; and a grandson, Darrell Bailey. She is survived by her husband, Paul J. Walters, Wytheville; son, George Walters, Wytheville; daughters and sons-in-law, Clara and Coburn Williams, Wytheville, Sally and Richard Bailey, Hawkinsville, Ga., Bettie and Herbie Patton, Wytheville; daughter-in-law, Hope Walters, Wytheville; nine grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren. Survivors include one brother, Curtis Williams, Philadelphia, Pa.; two sisters and one brother-in-law, Irene Burton, Yucca Valley, Calif., Martha and William Smith, Pittsburgh, Pa.; devoted friend, George Jones, Roanoke; four nephews; two nieces; a host of cousins; other relatives and friends.
