BIG SOUTH HONOR GOES TO SPOONER

For the second straight year, Ian Spooner of Radford has been selected the Big South Conference player of the year in men's soccer. Three teammates joined Spooner on the all-conference squad, chosen by the league's coaches.

Spooner had 20 goals and nine assists during the regular season. He is the second all-time leading scorer in the league with 140 points and the third all-time assist leader with 24. The senior from Oxford, England, led the Big South in scoring throughout the season and is ranked second in the nation in scoring. This year marks the fourth time he has been chosen to the Big South squad.

Spooner was joined on the first team by fellow forward Che Henderson (eight goals, eight assists) and midfielder Eduardo Wissar. Highlanders defender Kevin Gealt was voted to the second team.

Maryland-Baltimore County's Denise Schilte was named the women's player of the year. Radford had three players named to the team. Forward Kelly Riescher made the first team and defenders Jamie Dobson and Lori Patterson were selected for the second team. (Complete team in Scoreboard. C7)

In other sports:

Striker Robert Clarke of Davidson was chosen the Southern Conference player of the year. The junior led the Wildcats to a share of the regular-season championship while leading the conference in points with 32 and goals with 15.

Furman, which shared the conference regular-season title, earned coach of the year and freshman of the year awards. Doug Allison guided the Paladins to a 10-4-3 mark overall. Furman freshman goalkeeper Ronnie Pascale led the conference with a .950 goals-against average and six shutouts this season en route to the honor.

VMI forward Rich Daughtridge made the first team all-conference squad. The sophomore led the Keydets with six goals and three assists. Teammate Jon Dano made the second team on defense. (Complete team in Scoreboard. C7)

The Virginia Tech men's soccer team closed out its season with a 4-0 loss to Rhode Island in an Atlantic 10 tournament semifinal match at Kingston, R.I.

The fourth-seeded Hokies (8-10-2) kept the Rams scoreless for nearly all the first half, allowing a single goal with less than three minutes left. Rhode Island, the 14th-ranked team in the nation, added three more goals in the second half and outshot the Hokies 28-7.

The Rams (17-1-2) will face Massachusetts in the championship game Sunday afternoon. UMass defeated Xavier 3-1 in the other semifinal.

Chan Roush scored two goals and Keith Dumas had two assists as Marshall defeated VMI 2-0 in the first round of the Southern Conference soccer tournament at Davidson, S.C. Marshall advances to play top-seeded Furman today.

In other games, sixth-seeded Georgia Southern knocked off No.3 Appalachian State 6-4 and No.2 Davidson routed seventh-seeded Citadel 6-1. Davidson will face Georgia Southern today.

Leah McClimans scored three goals in the second half as fourth-seeded William and Mary defeated Radford 3-1 to advance to the semifinals of the Colonial Athletic Association field hockey tournament in Richmond. The Tribe will face top-seeded James Madison at 11 a.m. today.

Radford's Julie Costello scored the game's opening goal in the first half as the Highlanders held a 1-0 lead until halftime.

In other games, American defeated Richmond 5-1 and Old Dominion beat VCU 6-0. American will face Old Dominion in the other semifinal at 2 today.

Rhode Island defeated Virginia Tech 15-7, 14-16, 15-10, 11-15, 15-9 in the first round of the Atlantic 10 volleyball tournament at Kingston, R.I.

The four top seeds advanced to the semifinals of the Old Dominion Athletic Conference volleyball tournament. No.1 Washington and Lee defeated Emory & Henry 15-5, 15-6, 15-7; Guilford beat Eastern Mennonite 15-11, 15-11, 15-12; Bridgewater downed Randolph-Macon Woman's 15-10, 15-6, 15-7; and Roanoke beat Lynchburg 17-15, 16-14, 13-15, 15-17, 15-6. Washington and Lee will face Guilford today at 10 a.m. and Bridgewater will play Roanoke. The championship game will be held at 3 today.

Ferrum defeated Methodist 15-5, 15-4, 15-12 to advance to the semifinals of the Dixie Conference volleyball tournament at Greensboro, N.C.

In other games, Greensboro defeated Shenandoah 15-1, 15-6, 15-7 and Christopher Newport beat North Carolina Wesleyan 15-6, 13-15, 15-8, 16-14. Top-seeded Averett will play Christopher Newport at noon today and Greensboro will face Ferrum at 2. The championship will be played at 4 p.m.

Demons win cross country crown

Senior Justin Mosby tied the course record to finish first in the Region IV boys' cross country meet and lead Christiansburg to the team title at Radford's 3.1-mile course on Friday.

It was the seventh consecutive Region IV title for the Demons, who finished with 42 points.

Mosby, who finished third in the event last year, completed the course in 16 minutes, 19 seconds to tie the 1992 finish of Greenbrier East's (W.Va.) Andy McClintic.

Blacksburg's David Williams took second (16:38) and Christiansburg's Matt Nolan was third (16:45). Blacksburg finished second with 56 points and Abingdon was a distant third with 80.

In the girls' race, Blacksburg senior Sarah Hendricks set a course record with her first-place finish of 18:40 as the Indians defended their Region IV title. Hendricks, who finished seventh last year, beat defending state champion Colleen Crawford of Abingdon. Crawford finished in 18:58, also under the old mark of 19:27, which she set Sept.9.

The top four teams and top 15 individuals qualified for next Saturday's state meet in Warrenton. The Christiansburg boys are seeking their fifth title in seven years and are the defending champions. Western Albemarle is the defending girls' champion.

Virginia Tech freshman tennis player Aaron Marchetti advanced to the third round of play at the Rolex Eastern Regionals at Princeton University.

Marchetti defeated Vishal Gupts (St.John's) 6-0, 6-2 in his first-round match. In his second-round match, the unseeded Marchetti knocked off sixth-seeded Mitty Arnold (Harvard) 6-3, 6-3. Marchetti will next face Greg Boonswang (Princeton) today.
